Serpentine belt systems
I don't have a lot of room between the radiator and the crank in the 48 on the S10 frame, and I need some of that room for the electric fan.
There are a lot of serpentine belt systems out there, and I was looking at one when I saw it was 8" from the front of the pulleys to the tip of the crank! That won't work for my truck. So does anyone have a recommendation for what they used that took up minimal room, maybe 4"? If you have done this set up, how much room did you have between the back of the radiator and the end of the crank? Maybe I need to start over and move the motor back some.

I used a system off of a V6 1989-90 Firebird. My passenger side valve cover is 1 inch from the firewall. The electric fan motor just barely misses the fan pulley bolts, but it all works. Good luck.

I don't have an S-10 frame, but used the brackets from the 88-92 Camaro/Firebird. Even with the stock frame it was a little tight. I had to cut off a couple of pieces the plastic guard to clear the fan pulley.

A lot of guys like the setup off a 4.3 V6. Same front end of the engine as a small block that has all the bolt holes for brackets.
That is one thought though, as you have to make sure what ever you get you get a setup that is compatible with your engine. They "they are all the same" doesn't apply when trying to bolt pieces for a mid 80's 350 on a mid 60's 327.

Thanks Joe. I may have to scrap the 283 as I don't know the year. It looks in pretty good shape inside - I took it apart again, but not knowing the year makes getting anything to fit it problematic.

Jan, I'll take "barely" it's "uh oh" that worries me. I was looking at a serpentine kit until I read it was 8" from the tip of the crank to the outside edge of the kit. I do not have that much room without the fan.

I have SBC 350 with serpentine set up from S10 4.3 V6. This is on an S10 chassis. Still in construction mode, but looks like it will all fit. Long water pump for SBC is about 7" out from the front of the engine block at the pulley end, so the pulleys on the serpentine system will be around 7 to 8.5" from the front of the block.

I'm not a V8 guy but my crank was made for SBC damper. The spacers are in there for crank trigger. The outside of the pulley is about 2" from the crank snout. I'm having a SFI damper made with serpentine pulley on it. Then crank trigger 3/8", 3" blower pulley and dry sump oil pump pulley 1". It's still only about 5.5" in front of crank snout. I have electric P/S and A/C.

Wait till you see my 12 port cross flow aluminum head. The one on there is a race head I had made before I knew I could get the other one. It's the first of it's kind from New Zealand. About 10 years in R&D. Thanks.

Thanks Matt. Yes the heads do have some holes, but one of the articles you sent me has a reference guide to determine year by hole pattern. I tried searching several different ways, and I didn't find either of those articles. My search function skills are worse than my welding!

Check my build thread. I went through similar issues with finding a serpentine systems. I'm pretty sure I just went with a 1995ish and cobbled the parts from craigslist. Didn't end up being terribly expensive just make sure the pulley system is from the same vehicle. There are a few configurations. I probably have half an inch between the electric fan and the water pump pulley

8man, How did you solve your accessory drive system space issue? I'm at same point. I installed a GM performance system but it left me short of room for the fan and barely enough for the radiator.

I went with the KWIK performance system. It uses the Sanden mini compressor and mounts very close to the crank. Just enough room after I had the inlet on the bottom of the radiator turned down on a 45.

If you unbolt the water pump, and measure from the face of the block where the bolt hole is to the radiator, it's 9.5".

1/2" or so, maybe a little more. I've held the fan up, but not mounted it yet and so I don't have a really accurate measurement, but it's enough to clear.
