Mounting the hood
I'm finally going to mount the hood on my '53. I have the hinges and the springs blasted and ready. In what order do you do this? Put them all on the hood and mount them? Hinges only first?

Re: Mounting the hood
Hinges on the cab then hood on the hinges. Starting with the third image in this photobucket album are the pages from the factory service manual that tell how to adjust the hood. https://s173.photobucket.com/user/mr...%20info?page=1
It's probably best to save them to your computer and be able to expand the image to read it easily unless you have a big screen.

Re: Mounting the hood
He's right ^^^
You'll attach the hood in the fully open position. To do so requires two people, or I used my engine hoist with a frame I rigged to securely hold it.

Re: Mounting the hood
It's been so long since I put the springs on mine that I forgot exactly how I did it and I was over twice as strong then as I am now.
I probably used one of my big screw drivers or one of my brake spring tools but a piece of steel tubing with a notch in the end to fit over the hinge to pop the spring on with would be a lot safer. Years ago as in many someone made (home made) a setup that worked like a C clamp in reverse that stretched the spring and let you set it over the hooks on the hinge. That might be a bit complicated to get to work right though.

Re: Mounting the hood
I've never removed the springs; always kept the hinges and springs intact.

Re: Mounting the hood
No no. The springs are on their bracket, I mean when do you put the bracket (with the springs) on the hood and firewall? At the same time as the hinges, or after the hood is mounted with the hinges?

Re: Mounting the hood
I think that three of us said to bolt the hinges to the cab and then bolt the hood to the hinges. I don't see any advantage to having the hinges on the hood first and it will be a big fight to get everything in place. That from a guy who has removed and replaced his hood probably 30 times since 1973 on his own truck let alone the other trucks I have worked on.

Re: Mounting the hood
I think I'm clear on the hinges, but how about the springs? Do you mount the springs after the hood is mounted to the hinges? Or do a side of hinges and springs then the other side?
