Should I remove the shift tower top cover and weld it and re tap threads? or helicoil and seal it up?

Re: Best way to repair Threads
I just stripped some threads this weekend. This is what I’m going to use to make the repair.
Might be an option for you. http://www.timesert.com/html/inchsert.html |

Re: Best way to repair Threads
Having just gone through this with the NP435, I would go the route that doesn’t require removing the top cover. If you do remove the top cover, make sure you put it in reverse first, oh and by the way you can’t remove the top cover with it in the truck. You’ll have to pull it. Then you might as well reseal the whole thing and pressure wash it and repaint it while it’s out. It’ll also probably need new plastic shift fork guides. Then good luck getting the forks lined up (that’s the bit about putting it in reverse first... don’t ask me how expensive of a mistake that was...)
