M20 going in inplace of Saginaw 3speed 1965C10
Hey guys, looking for some incite here, Ive done a little research but Im looking for someone who actually has done the swap. I dropped off my used M20 to get redone and Im looking to see if anyone knows what Pilot bearing I will need to get? I was thinking of getting the flywheel resurfaced because I know it got a little hot a while back. I also wondered what clutch I need to get to replace the one that is in there for the Saginaw 3 speed? I have read the driveshaft should bolt up, fingers crossed. I have a new throw out bearing from the 68 GTO the trans came out of that I am hoping works. I have not pulled the stock 3-speed out yet, just gathering data as I want to tear into it in a couple of weeks.

You will need a typical bronze pilot bushing for a Chevy. The TO bearing must match the pressure plate. I would suggest getting the flywheel surfaced and buy a complete clutch kit which will include the pilot bushing, pressure plate, disc and TO bearing. Do you have a shifter for the M20 yet?

No sir I do not have a shifter yet, I have read Tri5 bench shifter, or bench seat Nova shifters should fit. Which complete clutch kit do you recommend?

You can simply get a clutch kit for a '65 C10. As for size, that will depend on how big of a clutch your flywheel will accept. I would go with a 11" if your flywheel will accept it.

Re: M20 going in inplace of Saginaw 3speed 1965C10
I have a "66 C10 that has a 3-speed now and I too have an M20 that I rebuilt completely and a stock Chevy aluminum Bell housing. I have yet to do the install, but I will be looking at where to set the Bell Crank as mine was fabricated on badly. With the aluminum bell housing I have, it takes a 10.5" flywheel and clutch. I would say that you will want to look at what bell housing will work, what you get for a bell housing and go from there. They can get expensive.

Can you install a M20/21/22 Muncie 4 speed into the factory cast iron bellhousing that the NP420 uses? I thought the input shafts and bolt pattern to the bellhousing were the same?

Re: M20 going in inplace of Saginaw 3speed 1965C10
The trans shop that I dropped it off at called and said
im looking at $1200 to repair it, Reverse is toast as is 2,3,4. He said it looks like whoever sold it to me had some fun with it, im not so happy. I also have a S10 T5 locally I am going to look at tomorrow as a backup. I just don't know if its worth it to put that kind of $$$ into it after I spent $500 to get it. |

A Muncie M20/21/22 will bolt right up up to an original '63-'67 truck bellhousing. Been there done that 40 years ago. If you use a '68-'72 truck bellhousing you need an adapter ring in the center hole.
