84 C10 upgrading headlights?

I am not looking to go to LEDs and not set on HIDs either. Are the halogen bulbs brighter than the halogen sealed beams? I am trying to get some better lighting but stay simple. If the halogen bulbs are no brighter than I might as well stay with the sealed beams and just look for the brightest one. I ahve been searching but I get 9 out 10 videos on leds.

I went w/ the Hella housings @49.00 ea.(Amazon) and a wiring harness for about 39.00. Then you can put in any H4 bulb you want. From mild to wild. Got a buddy that put in a LED light bar and it messes w/his radio.

I looked them up but those are the round housings and I need the 4x6 rectangle for my 84. Those only seem to come with a 9007 bulb and where I looked there was only one option of bulb.

The Hella housings are on Amazon under Hella Light housings, towards the bottom
164MMX132MM #003177871 these fit the 4X6 or what ever, the '84 square lamps.
Looks like 52.91 each, not cheap but who wants cheap. These are glass and you put in any H4 bulb you like

Just put 7” round Hellas in my ‘78. Thrilled with the improvement so far. Lots of good discussion here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=797895

Re: 84 C10 upgrading headlights?

I was looking into these but they only offer them in the 9007 bulb type and only offer one halogen bulb type. Im trying to get better lighting but keep it simple but dont think this will be any better than sealed beams ??????

Hella E-code housings, then the bulb of your choice. Power the bulbs through a relay. Just the housing upgrade with a stock wattage bulb is a huge improvement.

Re: 84 C10 upgrading headlights?

A few years ago I did the hella/halogen upgraded harness with relay. You definitely get better lighting. If I had it to do over again, I would just go with LED. You typically get brighter light without the need to upgrade the harness and adding relays.

Re: 84 C10 upgrading headlights?

Hella headlights are awesome, but they do drink power. I had 100/55 bulbs in my '72 hella housings and they made night time daytime! but they aren't technically legal on road... I plan on running the same in my son's '84 K20.

Re: 84 C10 upgrading headlights?

The issue with using LED bulbs in something such as a Hella housing is that the focal point of the light emitted from the bulb is in the wrong location for the housing, which causes the light to scatter, then you irritate oncoming drivers because they think you are driving with your brights on.

The reflector in a housing is designed to have the light source in a specific location. LED bulbs do not have their source in the correct location.

"But my LEDs are awesome" in 3...2...1...

Re: 84 C10 upgrading headlights?

love my j.w. speaker led conversions . no one flashing me yet thinking high beams . no mods to headlight buckets . no mods to wiring or relays needed .

good luck on finding good old school stuff that works . most stuff just dumps light everywere and not near as good as a true upgrade .

my k30 summer mode / winter mode / plow lights even upgraded and no one flashing me .

last 2 are a cheep under 100 buck pair of led conversion lights in a buddys peterbuilt . he hated them in the snow driving with no heater element for the lenses to not snow over . he swapped them with a extra set of j.w. speaker units i had with heaters and problem solved .

but look at just the low beam pattern . its just light tossed out with no care to pattern or other drivers . note the garage door panel seam . light top and bottom of the panel seam .

then the last pic is of the j.w. speaker low beam . DEFINED cut off line and WIDE spread of angle . note the door panel seam line is now right on the line for the light pattern cut off and a lot more light focused in front and down in front . i see deer on the side of the road now with these suckers when before i did not see them .

Re: 84 C10 upgrading headlights?

Sylvania Silverstar halogens work well for me. I still have glass headlights in my Jeep, but I also used 'em on the '86 Suburban I had. I remember when I switched and the improvement in brightness plus visibility. I even took before and after photos to show the difference. Good luck!
