Building a BADA$$ big block, need help.
I want to build a big block either for the next project or the 68 and need help. I want to know what kinda stuff if good in the larger aspects of the engine, as in heads, intake, pistons, rods, carbs, blah blah blah. Not really familiar with big blocks, so looking for you guys that have them. I am probably going to a 700r4 and am going to need a torque/stall converter too. I want to run somewhere between 600 and 750 horsepower on 92 octane with no nitrous. Also, do you guys recommend getting those Hotrod Bigblock books, or no?

1ST OF ALL I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND USING A 700R(TOO MUCH MONEY TO MAKE IT STRONG ENOUGH TO HANDLE TORQUE)2ND OF ALL HOW MUCH MONEY ARE YOU WILLING TO SPEND??3RD YOU NEED TO GET THE HP TO THE GROUND(COILOVERS,MODS IN REAREND ETC....)THESE PARTS AREN'T CHEAP EX. I PAID AROUND $450.00 JUST FOR MY HEADERS(HOOKER SUPER COMP FOR A 68 BB & THE LIST GOES ON...GOOD LUCK TO YA!! MINES ALREADY BUILT JUST SAVING FOR A TRANNY

Strongly suggest starting with a 502 GMPP short block. With a head with about 305-330 cc intake and cam around .56-.58 lift and about 260-270 duration at .050. That should easly support your wants.I was going to build something along these lines.I decided to change because with that much low end torque spining tires would become annoying. I looked into Air Flow Research Cylinder heads and they have a "package" that produces 470 ftlbs. torque and 450 hp. with 400+ ftlbs. from 2500 up. I figure this will get me in the low 13s maybe high 12s. If I need more, I will go on the bottle.

True about the tranny, I may end up getting a TH400 auto with a gear vendors OD or maybe even a NV4500 speed manual. Would vette 6-speeds handle that much power without a problem?

Also, I am either looking at a 427, 454 stroked to 496, or a 502. And what would be the pros and cons of each of these.

I agree on the 700r4, hughs makes a great stall conv and they have a thrust brg behind the stator which is what high torque eats alive. as far as the rat goes he likes a high fibre diet consisting mostly of greens as in green backs ,Im glad mines done! but once i drove it I didnt regret it have fun

All depends on how deep your pockets are. I use to build 540's for offshore boats. Want to spend $20 grand ? I stuck one in a 79 Caddy Coupe DeVille. Or first pass was 12.01. Not to bad for street tires and a carb with NO bottle. Buy a 454 or a 502 from someone like Scoggins. You can do that for about $7 grand. If you try to build your own, after the machine work, parts and time, your going to be in it for more than 7. As for me I have a good selection of motors, 409, iron 427's an allum 427, 454, 540. You know what I'm doing for my driver, good old 350, warmed up just a bit. I don't want to be filling the thing every other hour. I did a 78 dually with a 540 w/ overdrive and a tag axle, 10 tires on the thing, back in 1980. we could pull down buildings with it but we couldn't get 250 miles on 2 tanks. Just some food for thought
