Alternator Conversion
My Voltage Regulator has failed yet again. I would like to convert to internally regulated Alternator. I have read several different posts that discussed how they have done this. what post or video is the safest and most reliable method of eliminating the voltage regulator. thanks

Re: Alternator Conversion
Spend $20 on one of the “Conversion” plugs is the simplest and least chance of a mistake. Bypasses the regulator and adapts the exciter/sensing wire to the internal alternator. Add your 10si alternator in the 70 amp range and no need to change any wiring.

Re: Alternator Conversion
Yes that is all you need. It jumps 2 sets of wires where the regulator would be and converts the part that connects to the alternator/generator. This is very easy / simple to do. Just plug and play. Easily reversible.
Lots of info on the 10si / 12si. The most valuable thing here is the part numbers. http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...elcoremy.shtml I ordered mine off Rock Auto. I got the 78 amp 12si 9:00. Be aware the 10si / 12si top bolt is 10mmx1.5. I needed to grind the top bracket a bit for the bolt to fit.

Re: Alternator Conversion
Does the amp gauge work after the conversion?

Re: Alternator Conversion
Not sure. But when I upgraded mine I upgraded the gauge to a volt meter. Because i’m Told this is needed because of higher output. Tbone did a killer job on my volt meter. Can’t tell the difference from the ampl gauge.

Re: Alternator Conversion
I second the volt meter, Tbone did mine also and it looks factory. Actually the factory should have put volt meters in them to start with.

Re: Alternator Conversion
If you don't upgrade the wire sizes and the gauge worked prior to conversion then yes it should work. I upgraded mine with new wires and the calibrated resistance balance of the circuit was lost so now my gauge barely moves. I will switch to a voltmeter as that will be easier than trying to restore the balance of the system.

Re: Alternator Conversion
If you don't connect accessories to the passenger fender terminal block or battery, and you don't upgrade the gauge or change the length (about 6 ft I think) of the 12 gauge red wire that runs across the top of the radiator between the passenger fender terminal block and the soldered junction that is wrapped with tape near the driver side headlight, then the amp gauge should operate fine. That section of 12 gauge wire is a specific resistance and it is the shunt that makes the ammeter work.

Re: Alternator Conversion
I put a 12SI alternator on mine and did the three wire configuration instead. It was pretty simple, the board was very helpful.

Re: Alternator Conversion
Get a solid state regulator instead of the stock type and you won’t have any more problems.
