cheap steering column question
i have a 68 i am restoring and when i got it it was just a chassis and cab that had all new metal on it. came with some unknown chrome steering column that im assuming is a universal. it has no adjustable mounting holes to attach to anywhere. im having a hard time figuring out how to secure it so its not moving around. i just got a set of steering column brackets as this thing was bare and im piecing it together! but i dont think this will help. has anyone installed one of these cheaper columns? any pointers on this?

Looks like the tube might be a little smaller than stock but it should work. Here are the brackets you would need under the dash. The small narrow one goes in first. EDIT: Here is another picture that also shows the outer firewall brackets. The Large bracket for the '67-'68 looks about the same as the '69-'72 but the one for the '67-'68 would have the holes for the hand operated emergency brake handle. LockDoc

Above the column, near the dash on the brake pedal bracket there is a NUB which on a factory column goes into a slot on the column preventing the column from rotating, and moving in and out.
On a repro column, either tighten it down real tight with the firewall clamp....or (best)mark the nub location on the column and drill a hole to locate the column. Factory the column bowl mounts about 1.75” from the plastic guage bezel, in and out mounting is variable by collapsing the intermediate steering shaft from the column to the steering gear box. |

I flipped the pictures for you. You need the clamps that Doc posted. Put the one on the fire wall on first and get it at the right depth and angle. Then the small clamp goes under the dash to hold the column in place. As in my last two pictures.

Ok thanks guys. Got the brackets coming from a member here. Thank you for posting pictures, that helps. I'm putting this thing together from scratch and it's been a bit frustrating, but is coming together. Thank you again.
