Anyone have this problem?

Hey folks. I'm so frustrated right now. 1968 c10 stepside with a 307 manual trans. Started up fine, drove about 3 miles to a gas station, filled up, and now the engine won't start. I called for a jump. That wasn't it. Still won't start. Almost sounds like it's starved for fuel. Everything looks fine. Has anyone ever had this after a fill up? All electrical look fine too. I'm stumped. AAA is towing the truck back to my house as we speak.

A little clarification would help. Does it crank over at all? Define “all electrical looked fine”? Have you checked for a spark at a plug? Does it have a points distributor or HEI? If the latter, a failed HEI module can result in a cranking but no-start condition. Having just pumped gas would just be a coincidence, something has failed or it was flooded.

I have had a similar issue before with my buddy's k10, we went to the gas station put 12 gallons in and the truck would crank but wouldn't start. We traced it back and found that the mechanical fuel pump had gone out and there wasn't fuel going into the carb. We just poured some fuel into the carb and it started right up which then isolated it to a fuel issue.

I'm going to spray some starter fluid into the carb. If it starts, it isn't an electrical issue. If it doesn't start, it's a fuel issue

And if it's points, the coil might have failed. Had it happen to me many years ago just a few hundred feet from my house.

At any rate it's gonna be interesting to see what the problem is.

My guess it's fuel and/or vapor. Any chance the tank was near empty when you filled it up sending sentiment into the line? May be as simple as replacing the fuel filter.

If it don't crank, or have any lights... check the inline fuse block near the battery. Comes off a hot lead that goes to a post on the passenger side fender.

Air/fuel /spark. Compression is another necessity. If all is available it should run.

Is it turning over and just won't start, or no cranking at all? I agree with Truckenrc, it very well could be the fuel pump.

I would say fuel pump also. If it has an HEI ignition, it could be the module. I have had them go bad for no apparent reason also .02

Omg. Please diagnose things before throwing parts at it.

Put a timing light on it. Crank. Light flash?
Hit throttle while looking down carb. See fuel?
Disconnect fuel line and put hose in canister.
Crank engine. Fuel come out?
Basic checks to start the process of figuring it out.

This may sound stupid , But by chance did you fill it up with diesel. I had a friend accidentally fill up with diesel in a gas vehicle. It made it about 3 miles down the road and was stranded.
Anything is possible.

Any other factors your not sharing like power washing the engine bay before filling up? Any modification made not factory?

It sounds like it is cranking. That is a good start. You need spark, fuel, and compression to run. I'm guessing nothing major happened inside your engine while filling up, so we will assume compression is fine. That leaves spark and fuel. Quick test for fuel is to dump some down the carb. If that gets it going, there is a fuel issue somewhere. If not, start looking at ignition. Go from there following it back.

Fuel issues could be related to choke, accelerator pump, float, fuel filter (or sock), fuel pump, a hole in a line (before the pump it sucks air). Could also be a case of bad gas, or filling the tank stirring up water or sediment in the tank.

Ignition issue would be at the distributor. A single plug or wire failing would leave it running bad, but still start and run. Look at HEI module or points, coil, power to the coil, and rotor.
