chevy 230 inline 6 question
looking at buying this inline 230 from a 68 c10 which appears to be very original. my question is that above each exhaust port is a thread in fitting that has been cut off and folded over to shut them, and it has a shield/plate with a circle in it like a heat riser. I only see some 60s 230s with the fittings above the exhaust ports, and they are always capped. the date code ends in 7 suggesting it's a 1967 engine, but just want some confirmation or understanding what the fittings and heat plate were originally for. thanks!

Re: chevy 230 inline 6 question
Not sure about the heat shield, but the fittings are for smog control pipe manifold. Is there a way you could check to see if the head has been switched from a newer truck? The way I remember that smog plumbing didn't show up on trucks until 69's??

Re: chevy 230 inline 6 question
thanks for the suggestion! I found this and sounds like in 68 they had a smog pump and this smog tube. It's in a 68, so if that's true, I guess I can just plug them all.

Re: chevy 230 inline 6 question
Those are air injection tubes for emission control. The tubes have been cut off & bent over to seal them. You can remove them & put 1/4 in pipe plugs in the holes. The threads are not the same but the pipe plugs screw in & seal the openings. They look a lot better then the cut off tubes. The plate is also an emissions device. It had a metal tube in it that went to the air cleaner to bring warm air into the intake. If it is a 67 engine it may have been in a California truck. The 48 states started that system in 68.

Yup, the remains of the old smog pump bracket is still there above the alternator. Looks like somebody cut it off with a hacksaw. Still has all the double groove pulleys that ran the pump as well.

Re: chevy 230 inline 6 question
You can buy 5/16" inverted flare plugs which will seal the holes. You probably should use JB Weld on the threads of those plugs, because of the age of the parts. Though they may be just fine, since the B-nuts are still in there, and the machined flare could still be good.
If you buy it, replace that fuel line.
