5-speed manual for stock 250
I have a friend who's father in law has a 65 C10 that his father bought new. He drives it every day. Engine has been built 2-3 times and the speedo hasn't worked since the 80s. It has a 250 (from a '68 Nova) and 3 on the tree. The transmission is about to die and the column shift is completely worn out.
What is the easiest 5 speed to put on the back of a stock 250? He does not care about the speedometer. Can you use an S10 4.3 5-speed?

Yes. The S-10 5 speed is ideal for that application. Search this website & others. There is gobs of information on this swap.

When I swapped my Camaro WC T-5 into my C-10 I could swear I came across a company or two that made the adapter plate for mating an S-10 T-5 to our stock bellhousing. BTW, replacing my floor shifted 3-speed with the T-5 was probably the best modification I've done to my truck so far from the standpoint of drivability and usability. No more listening to the engine roar on the freeway when I'm only doing 65 mph. No more searching for a gear everytime I downshift. She's a cruiser now. |

At the time, there were a few, but all were out of stock and no projected restock date. This one cost me about $10 if I recall.

I think the NV3500 is going to be easier to find than a T5,
I think it would work fine behind a small 6 If you do a search you are likely going to find lots of post of people blowing them up behind the torque of V8's

Re: 5-speed manual for stock 250
I've built 3 of them behind 350 v-8s & never have hurt one. Of coarse i'm an old man & drive normally.

It really doesn't matter what you put it behind, it matters how you plan to drive it. If you're doing burnouts from stoplight to stoplight, T5 not recommended behind anything. If you're going to drive it without harsh shocks to the system, it's perfectly fine behind any small block.

I appreciate all the advice. I am just the info gatherer for my friend. They may find another 3-speed and go some more. I was just trying to see how much of a project this might be as good 3-speeds are getting harder to find and the pick-a-parts seem to have these S-10s.

Re: 5-speed manual for stock 250
the nv3500 will hold up fine behind a stock v8. I have personally owned 3 stock 350 trucks that had one version or another without problems. 2 TBI and one vortec truck. An inline motor should never hurt one.
