Tailgate trim removal

Any tips on getting these clips out without breaking them. Seems like the hole is to small to start with. Also when going back after paint is there a better clip or different style that might work better?

Putty knives under each side to compress the clips. Pretty hard to do.

Seemed like I read a post years ago about this and some of the guys were drilling the holes out bigger until it fit better. Might be something to try on a old no good tailgate.
