Help with Tachometer dash

Looking for some help in completing a tachometer dash. I already have the tins and lens. Lots of extra gauges too. I think all I need is the tachometer, HEI wiring harness and printed circuit.

Anything else I’d need?

Where should I buy the parts I need?

Anyone sell a tachometer that works with HEI ignition?

I am also i the process of putting together one standard tach cluster and one tach/vac cluster. I have everything I need except one tachometer. I was going to order one from Classic Parts ( https://www.classicparts.com/1967-19...departments/7/ ) but it says they are out of stock on them. I don't know if there is more than one manufacturer or not. I notice that some of the vendors list them as Dynacorn brand and some don't list a manufacurer. I don't usually order from LMC but they show them in stock.

It looks like working with HEI is a crap shoot. One vendor says if you are going to use the aftermarket tach's with HEI be sure you have an OEM GM HEI or at least an OEM ignition module in the distributor.

Thumbs up Re: Help with Tachometer dash

I just finished this one last night. Stock Tach dash. New LED bulbs and lens with Bezel. Painted all the needles to match and cleaned everything up good.
I have another one I will do as soon as my parts get here.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

How about a video of it in the dark. This was on the table not in the truck.
They say these are able to dim but they really don't. They do fade just a bit but they are pretty much either on/off.

Re: Help with Tachometer dash

Aftermarket tach works fine with two different HEI’s in my truck. I’m a TBONE customer - can personally say the customer service is top notch. I would recommend.

Subbed for future reference.
As soon as I can get to it, I’m putting a new Counterpart Temp gauge in.
My Original one started registering hot, and after replacing all the components under the hood and verified that the engine IS NOT running hot, the only component left is the gauge. I was told that they have an integrated resistor so the external one is not needed.

That's funny Leon. The ignition module has nothing to do with pulse signal that runs the tach. It gets its pulse from the pick up coil.

I sell Counterpart brand tachs and never had one failure in 7 years.

They do not work on multi spark discharge ignition systems.

Hi Tom,

I'm not a tach guru myself, but this has been posted by a well respected vendor on here many times.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=698386

Also this thread.

Post #27, and you seemed to agree with him in post #28. Let me know, I just don't want to post erroneous info.

Thanks,
LockDoc

First, I would never discount what Paul adds to this hobby. He is a smart man. Do you know who the manufacture of the tachs are that Paul sells.

I would be the first to agree that using high quality ign parts is the only way to go. I have taken HEI distributor's out of trash cans that work better than any China distributor.

To date after 7 yrs and I would roughly guess 300 aftermarket tachs, not one failure from using HEI.

I don't pretend to know everything, but I could be an advocate for aftermarket tachs.

The question has never been "will my tach work if I use a junk module?".

From my end, I have no idea what these guys are plugging that 12g brown wire to. I know what not to hook it to.

This has been debated forever but from my side, nothing to worry about.

Thanks Tom. I will keep mentioning it in threads then, but I will include not to use the HEI's from overseas also.

I have no idea what brand tach they sell, or even how many different manufacturers there are.

Here is the link for the bulbs off Amazon.
Note: I used the factory tachs on both my trucks with factory HEI and never had problem. I used one aftermarket tach and it lasted less than 3 months. Brothers made it good though so no complaints but now I run a 3amp in line fuse on the 12 volt wire from fuse block.

Andy does the stock dimmer work with the LED's? If not what do you use to dim them?

from what i have been reading you need to find a dimmable led bulb. not all led bulbs are dimmable.

Lightbulb Re: Help with Tachometer dash

To answer your question.

I bought them and tried to dim them. They barely would. Basically they don't, they are either on or off.

I don't know why any one would want to dim them though. I have owned my truck 35+ years and never dim the dash lights. I have them on full bright all the time so I can see the numbers and not be guessing as to my speed and such.
Now that I'm 60 I need them more than ever to be bright.
