Factory Radio - (sort of)

purchased truck with cut dash where radio was, found a factory AM radio but wouldnt fit after installing new A/C hoses which were bigger than original. since I listen to a blue tooth speaker using iphone, thought a fake radio would look nicer than a blank out plate, so took the band saw to the radio, now it fits! ha ha, looks better than a blank plate to me.

You may have the purists circling you with pitchforks for the radio amputation, but I think that turned out darn good! Well done.

That's slick, and a great way to semi-restore hacked dashes without a lot of welding & grinding. You could put a dash lamp behind the radio bezel and really mess with people! Heck, even replace the radio knobs with wiper switch for a kill switch to the tach lead, power courtesy lights, etc.

Looks good. I recommend wiring up the preset buttons to squawk different sounds from under the dash for each button, like rooster crows, pig oinks, horse neigh, cow bell, engine sputtering and stalling. You can get a recordable box from some place like Build-A-Bear Workshop.

Re: Factory Radio - (sort of)

What??? Your way of fixing a molested dash is by molesting the radio??? Might as well put a '59 Impala dash in there now!!

Those modern converted factory radios are space savers. They give you 180w and they bare only a couple inches deep. You might still have all they need to do one for you. They put a new lens in anyway

Looks great, job well done! I may have missed it but what did the radio plate come from, is that an aftermarket plastic plate that you painted or?

Re: Factory Radio - (sort of)

A metal fab friend made the face plate for me. figured hacking a radio might tick off the purist but had the old radio laying around the garage and had the face plate, maybe the IPA's got the best of me when I was eyeballing the band saw !

Re: Factory Radio - (sort of)

at least it wasn't a slidebar AM/FM

I've seen a lot more valuable and more rare parts sacrificed for less so you'll get no grief from me..

I actually think it's a good looking "plug" in what was an ugly hole.. nice metal work too

also better looking and much cheaper than any of the digital wannabe lookalikes..

the closest modern match to an actual OE AM/FM is about $700

Re: Factory Radio - (sort of)

Hurts to hear what you did to it but the end result looks great!
I would not have the Huevos to do that and I have two spare AM radios!
