Tire Size Opinion

Hey folks,

There's a million threads on here about tire sizes, but I wanted your opinion on what would look best on my rig:

I am going to replace the tires soon and I'm having a hard time deciding on size. The tires on it now are A/T's and 235/75/15 on 8" rallys. They have a lot of tread left, but are almost 20 years old. They have to go.

I used to run 275/60/15's on my '78, but it was lowered and I have no plans of lowering the burb. So I'm thinking of running 255/70/15 or maybe just sticking with 235/75/15...what do you all think? Would 31" tires be ridiculous on a 2wd?

I want the wheel wells filled out a little better.

Your opinions are appreciated.

Re: Tire Size Opinion

31s would fit and do good on the burb (your speedo will be way off). If sticking to closer to stock I would run the 255/70. Give a bit more foot print at the same height as the 235/75. My 81 had 31x10.5x15 on it, but it was a little too tall with a 6 banger and 2.73 rear gears. It sure brought down the highway RPMs though.

Re: Tire Size Opinion

I always figured the 30x9.50r15's were the next size up from a 235/75r15. I like them on my K10. I don't like to get too wide for winter driving.

Re: Tire Size Opinion

I've never been around Suburbans much, but 31" tires look really good on a stock height 1/2-ton 2wd pickup of this vintage. We've got a 1973 F-100, 1996 F-150, and a 1973 c20, all with that approximate tire size. Just keep the width within reason. 9" or 9.5" is okay. 10.5" starts looking too wide, in my opinion.

Re: Tire Size Opinion

The 255/70's get my vote. Just a little taller vs. the 235/75's.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

I've run 255 70/15s on my trucks for years, so I'll give those the nod. =-)

Re: Tire Size Opinion

Thanks everyone! I think I'll be going the 255/70 route. I found a couple pics of 31's on 2wd with factory stance...just a little too full for me.

I'll post some pics when I get the new treads on!

Nice looking burb ... agree with 255 70s.
