newer radio install

What do you guys use to cut into the dash to put a new radio in? I'm planning on instaling my new radio over the Christmas break and rewiring my whole audio system.

i have always used a dremel measure twice cut once and make sure you have a whole bunch of cutoff wheels as they break easy and the multi speed dremel is alot better than the two speed one. trust me there isnt a thing you cant use a dremel for i love mine
I even used mine with cutoff wheels to get rusty bolts off the bed and to start the chisel area for when i had to change body mounts on my chassis

Well, I'm going to go way against the grain here. I hate Dremel tools. They are under powered, cutoff wheel eating, pieces of crap. Don't get me wrong, I have one, but rarely use. I get sick of having to buy tubes of the little disks. Why can't they make them things a little stronger?

I recommend a Rotozip. Now we are talking a multi purpose tool here. They have all kinds of bits to use, for whatever type of material you are cutting. If you buy a nice kit, they even have about the same stuff as the Dremels. If you've ever used one to cut metal, you'd throw the Dremel in the so so tool pile.

I like air powered peanut grinders. You cant break them or overheat them. they come in 90* and straights. Get a couple burrs, arbor and cutting discs, a couple of flappers and your in business. You do need a pretty decent compressor. The dremel tool will work good for cutting plastic or polishing jewlery. But for anything else they dont hold up in my opionion Even a electric drill work will work like a dremel tool bowtie:

Ocbaud, do you work for Westlake Ace Hardware??

The company I work for processes the payment transactions for Westlake Ace Hardwares. I actually coded the interface that Westlake payment terminals process with on our host computer.

Here's part of the press release when they came live.

Lynk Named Payment Processor for Largest ACE Hardware Dealer

Atlanta, GA – March 18, 2003 - Lynk Systems, Inc. announced today a multi-year agreement to provide integrated electronic payment services to Westlake ACE Hardware, the largest ACE Dealer in the United States with more than 75 stores located in eight Midwestern states. Under the terms of the agreement, Lynk will interface to Westlake's POS software provider, SDI, to provide credit, debit and comprehensive electronic gift card processing. Lynk will also install and manage a Sprint frame relay network for all of Westlake's locations, which will be used for real-time processing, as well as the exchange of corporate data.

I bent the metal back where the knobs go through, that way I can bend them back if I ever want to.

I second that. I use my Rotozip for everything.

A company named SDI actually designed the systems that you use. I actually write the interfaces to VISA/MasterCard, etc. :p

Actually, they also make fiberglass-reinforced carbide cutting disks. These are what I use on my Dremel with great success. They are a little larger and don't shatter when you sneeze like the little reddish-brown ones do...

You are right Kevin. But if you ever use a Rotozip with the metal cutting bits, as I said, you'd throw the Dremel in a never used pile of collected tools like I have.

IMO, Dremels are good for stuff like model working and very small sanding. What gets me is the ads they have on TV about them.

I guess being in construction, for a tool to sastify me, it must hold up to some tough punishment. A Dremel just don't cut it. (No pun intended) I have used Rotozips for everything you can think of. Believe me, if you used a Dremel the way we use a Rotozip, it would last about 10 minutes. The motor would melt the casing. I guess they are good for what they were intended to be used for, but they advertise them as the tool of all tools. It just ain't so.

I used my Dremel to cut 2 12" holes in 3/4" plywood, for my sub box. I think I killed the bearings, its loud, but still works! When I cut my dash it worked great, the cutoff wheels are expensive and do not last long though...
I marked and cut the dash bezel, then i marked and cut the dash, came out pretty good.

i have a pioneer head unit aswell. to remove the deck, you need to take off the trim. the gray or silver part that covers up a gap between the bezel and the deck. it should just snap off by pulling the top of it up and out. once that is removed, you will need he keys that came with your deck. they are two narrow flat keys that you stick parallel of the sides of the deck. you slide them in between the deck and the cage. one you hear both of them click... you can pull it out. if your just going to be hooking up some rca's i would just get behind the dash with a flashlight.

POS is a great abreviation for that Software. I HATE IT.
My stupid IT department keeps trying to update POS on my main terminal.....problem is I don't have POS on this computer. They shut me down 2-3 times a day sending these. The computer in my office that does have it is down.

What did you do about the floor vents? I am looking at building a consol for my Burb. I think I want to duct some of the floor vent out the back to keep the kids warm in the back seat. Takes forever to warm up back there with no rear heater. I still want some to dump in the front foot wells. I don't care for the air blowing out the dash vents so I use Floor most of the time.

I would make a center console but I have a full truck most of the time so I need that middle seat and floor area.
