Finally got my dream truck... 72 Cheyenne Super

After searching for several years, the stars aligned, and with my wonderful wife's approval I finally have my dream truck.

A true survivor, 46k original miles, 350V8 Auto, PS, PB, AC.

Paint is mostly original, just the upper part and inside of the bed were repainted.

This won't be a build like most; I'm not going to cut her down to a short bed. #KeepLongbedsLong I'm not going to LS swap her. I'm not going to lower her.

I'm going to give her a complete tune up, replace a few worn parts (seat cover, woodgrain inserts in the door etc) and just drive the heck out of her.

Down the road, I'd like to relocate the gas tank under the bed, with an F-body tank and flip down license plate for the fill. Maybe a Retrosound radio...

Goal is to keep her as close to stock and original as possible.

Here are a few pics

That thing is so original, I wouldn't put a Retrosound in it, personally. I bought a Retrosound for my 70 C10 and because its so far off from being on the road, I ended up putting it in my 74 C20. While it functions fine, it fits like crap, and it really is cheaply made. For my C10, I'm just going to have my original AM radio converted to modern with an Aux jack and USB. While it's more money, I think it's worth it in the long run for fit alone.

Anyway, sweet truck and congrats. That engine bay is nearly spotless!

Thanks, Brother's has one that looks really good, too, but I don't know... I'm torn... I want the original look, but also am so used to tunes when I drive...

Maybe just keep my JBL Flip on the bench, lol...

What a special truck. Great plan. Are you going to keep the wheels/tires as-is?

Thanks! Yes, no changes to wheels. The tires are new, so no change for now, but when they are worn I'll likely go for something closer to original from Coker.

I like your plans!!!
My only question is about the fuel tank. I agree strongly about getting the tank OUT of the cab! Plus I like the idea of the fuel fill behind the license plate...BUT, the trade off for the license plate fill, is that the "F" body tank does not fit between the frame rails. Making it sit lower. I don't like the idea of that. I plan for Boyd welding tanks in my 67 and 68. Just not sure of where the fuel fill will be! We need more and better choices for the between bed tank fill situation...

I saw a video, have to find it again... the 69 F body tank does fit between the rails, just the straps are the opposite way. All the tanks sit lower unfortunately...

I just can't do a bed fill... thought about the tail light or side marker mods, but both take away something from originality... and license plate fills were common back in the day, so in my mind that's a better option.

It would be great if the available bolt in tanks had a rear fill option to use the license plate but they all seem to think top or side is all that people want.

Just got my original '72 Duval County truck plate from DMV, approved!

Looks so good on the truck. Pouring here in Jax right now but I'll get a pic tomorrow.

Thanks for all the nice words...

All the tune-up parts arrived today, so I know what I'll be doing tomorrow!

A very nice truck indeed
I believe it came out of Dallas, correct?
If it is the one I’m thinking of
I drooled over it for quite some time

I appreciate you are leaving it original
I’m sure it drives like it is new

The wood grain looks to be pretty good on the
Cluster and glove box door
In my opinion, there is no really good aftermarket matches

On your wood grain door panel inserts
These are the closest I have found to the original’s

If you want to darken them up you can spray a light coat of clear
It will also make them shinier like the originals

Thank you! Yes, this came from Streetside Classics in DFW.

It drives great and I'm very happy.

The driver's door woodgrain is scratched pretty bad where a ring or watch would when using the door handle. The passenger isn't bad at all. At least if I replace the pair they'll match even if they're a little off from the dash/glove box. I'd rather that than the scratches.

If there was any one thing I wished differently for my truck, is to be that color (oh and it to be a super!!). Green is my most favorite color in the world. Though that is not to say I don't like the color of mine ;-)

If it is not to rude to ask, what did she cost you?

Thank you! I do love this color, though the medium blue or medium green have always been favorites.

I think I got a really good deal for what she is, all original, no rust, numbers matching... $24k

Re: Finally got my dream truck... 72 Cheyenne Super

Med Blue or the Light blue are very very nice - my daughter wanted a C10 that was light blue/white that was on a car lot (though is was in rough shape and wanted WAY to much for her).

I suppose I did okay on mine then, I paid 15k from an owner down the road from me in Buda, Texas. Other than yours being Super, our base options are similar. But I have put ~10k into her since last April. Mainly for the rebuild of the SBC 350/TH350/AC - though I have done a *lot* of little things that add up REAL fast LOL.

Edit:
Oh, my odometer was reading 94k, which we are pretty darn sure it hasn't been rolled over. While the engine/transmission leaked, the internals were in really good shape for their age/milage and never opened up before. Which my brother (my rebuilder) was really surprised with.

Yep, my odo is at 46k and the guy that inspected it for me in DFW said he was sure it was original. Now that I've seen it, I agree.

If I do everything I want, replacing worn items, tank under the bed, etc. it'll probably be around $3-4k. It does add up quick...

Re: Finally got my dream truck... 72 Cheyenne Super

Great color combo, my favorite, and the price seems more than fair.

If you are keeping it as close to stock as possible I'm curious why move the tank? With a good filler neck seal and a nice gas cap it should work perfectly with no fume problem. I dont remember seeing any safety problems with this set up either.

The engine bay is sweet!

Rallye's look great on these trucks, but if you're going for stock they never came on 67-72's. But if mostly stock they are the perfect choice.

Keep the pictures coming, love to see interior shot of the seat.

Thanks! Yes, I know, moving the tank isn't 'keeping it original' and the Rallye's were there from the prior owner. I like them too much to change to hub caps...

Maybe better to say as original as possible within reason, and still original looking.

Wife and I drove the truck to dinner last night. It was the first pleasure cruise for both of us. Really cool. She gets a lot of attention. My wife does too, lol.

Here's the interior:

You can see one of the two seat tears, and the wear on the door woodgrain... Those are on my list to replace. Carpet is good but faded, probably replace that too somewhere down the road.

Re: Finally got my dream truck... 72 Cheyenne Super

Your truck is the exact color combo that brought me in to the 67-72 fold. And I've never had one in that combo haha.

My current 71 C30 Cheyenne Super is white with the dark olive interior. I'm excited to get my bench rebuilt with the new cover, exactly the same as yours. Thanks for the pics.

Beautiful truck, nice score....Your truck now, to do what you like....for me safe and comfortable. New seat cover and carpet, and 3 point seat belts would be on my list, doesn’t require drillIng any new holes.

Pics please? I see a plug up where they might mount on mine.

Just checked Brother's, and they don't have green... have to look elsewhere.

I got my last set from this board member via this thread ...

https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=657298

They have several different greens, he'll send you samples if you wish. And yes you remove that plug and there is a threaded insert to attach the upper part of the belt.

Big congrats on finding/getting that truck.

Hope you enjoy it.

Why move the tank? These trucks aren't really 'that safe' regardless of where the tank is. Drive em with extreme care. JMO.

Congrats again!
