How to ADD a Tach
I want to add a Tach to my truck. But not sure how I would wire it up exactly. Does anyone know of an aftermarket tach that would fit in the middle of the instr cluster panel? It is a standard instr cluster without the tach and only the three other gauges. I would like to "fill the holes" with appropiate gauges. I have never done this before and would like to do it.
Thanks

Its not very hard....just take apart the dash and slice appropiatley
![]() A hole say, jig saw, or a dremel with a cutoff wheel works well. I have had good luck with sunpro guages....but if you can afford better, get some Autometers ![]()

Aside from finding a tach that would fit and other new gauges to replace the old, how to wire it/them is my main mental challenge with this. I'm not sure on that part. I am kind of Electrically challenged mostly.

Wiring it up is dead simple....just follow the directions that come with the tach. Four wires is all it takes....the instructions make it ultra easy.
Black wire-ground (any clean metal surface on the truck) Green wire-tach feed (TACH terminal on HEI) Red wire-power, any source that is hot with the ignition is on (IGN UNFUSED terminal in fusebox works great) White wire-Backlighting wire, i tapped into the wire that lights up the heater controls light bulb. Very, very easy to do. Only took me 20 minutes or so when i installed it on the steering collumn.

It still has the original points type distributor. Is there a Tach connector on it?

it IS the neg side of the coil. Just crimp a connector on the end of the wire and stick it on there
