Elderbrock AVS carb

Hey everyone.
My quadrajet is leaking and vacuum lines stopped up.
I am researching the Elderbrock AVS carb for a upgrade fix.
I'm wondering if anyone on here has ran one of these newer style carbs and what the review is.

I have one on my Firebird and it works fine. I believe it is the 1906 but would have to check to be sure.

Elderbrock is out of the 1906. I'd have to get the off road version, the 1916.
I don't think it should matter much, but I'm not sure.

No offense meant and certainly not ragging on you, but if you spelled Edelbrock correctly, (not Elderbrock), you'd have much better luck in your search.. Summit Racing has numerous models ready to ship..

If you go with an Edelbrock, there's some accessories you must buy for it. You'll need a fuel pressure regulator set at ~5.5 psi or the Edelbrock fuel pump to combat flooding. Also need a heat insulating gasket to stop fuel percolation. Then you'll need a calibration kit to dial it in.

Is rebuilding the q-jet not an option?

The AVS2 gets very good reviews, even from hotrodders. A significant improvement over the earlier AVS is the AVS2's annual booster.

A fuel pressure regulator never hurts, but then again I've never had to use one on any of the 8-10 Edelbrock carbs I've worked with over the years.

What you will need is an insulator like Edelbrock #9266 to keep the fuel in the float bowls from vaporizing. This can happen on hot days when you leave the truck sitting for a while after driving. It's not a major deal, but it may take several seconds of cranking to get the engine restarted. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-9266

I actually installed the 600cfm version on on a mild crate 350 8-10 years ago, and haven't had to touch it since. However, I see they are getting a bit pricey, so they're losing their edge over Edelbrock and Holley.

I have read that the new AVS has internal parts built for the gas that is readily available. And the Qjet was just rebuilt a year ago. I can't get non ethanol gas around where I live. Thats my thinking behind not rebuilding it.

Thanks for the summit lead. Just thought it would be cool to order from the manufacturer.

I will have to find out what my gas pressure is now. Been curious anyways.

How thick is that insulator. I already have a .25" thick one now.

I like them for milder engines, but the accelerator pump is a bit lacking for big engines.

If you go for it. Buy a tuning manual, and get a some of the supplies.

I got a AEM O2 sensor people recommended off a post I did, and it really helps dialing something in. Because I can see a difference, but also see what my engine likes there by I can replicate it while dialing it in better.

The #9266 insulator is just under 5/16" thick.

Edelbrock carbs come with comprehensive tuning manuals, which are also available online. https://edelbrock-instructions-v1.s3...ning-guide.pdf

Depending on your altitude, cam, exhaust, etc., you may not have to do much beyond setting idle mixture and idle speed. And you can adjust metering rod height if necessary.

The AVS calibration kit is part #1948. There are several knock-off kits available for much less money, but I have no idea of the quality. Probably hit or miss Chinese Communist stuff. I'd definitely want to have a micro drill index and calipers to check the jets and metering rods before I installed them.

I guess I should of mentioned that I am running the original engine.
350, bored .03 over. Only rebuilt once as far as I can tell.
So, it's a milder engine.

Love my AVS2, a 1905 w/manual choke. It starts so well that I don't need the choke at all and have it wired off. I also strongly suggest installing a fuel regulator and a carb insulator. I used a Mr Gasket #9710 regulator and Edelbrock's #9266 insulator. I also installed a VDO fuel pressure gauge (Summit #VDO-153002). Getting the tuning kit is a great idea. The tuning charts make it easy to dial in.

Tim, what was the fuel pressure w/o a regulator? Mechanical pump?

Hey Mike, I believe it was pushing 9psi or so on a mechanical pump before I installed the regulator.

tim_mc, be very wary of the mr. gasket fuel regulator. I had one on my truck and after about a year the gasket failed and I came very close to setting the truck on fire.

I like the Edelbrock Performer Carburetors. Currently running a 1411 but the 1406 should be all you will need for your application.

But I'm also fortunate there is 93 octane non ethanol locally.

Running a 1406 on a mild 350 in my 72. One or to pumps starts right up no insulator but I'm running 91 non ethonal gas.

I agree with "raggedjim". That type of regulator is not to be trusted. Every one I've seen being used was either leaking or at least seeping. If yours isn't now it will.

For the same price, you can get the Holley type clones from Jegs or Summit. Even though they are bigger and harder to mount, they are much more reliable.

I swapped out a Holley street avenger for an Edelbrock AVS-2. No comparison. I had heat soak start problems, vapor lock and was not that great in drivability. The AVS-2 was so much better. Ran both with an heat isolator and the stock mechanical fuel pump, no regulator. Lately I switched out the fuel pump to an Edelbrock one to keep the fuel pressure in check, just in case. No difference in anything.

I need an excuse to try an AVS2 carb, but my truck's very old 1406 still works very well. I just recently went through it as a preventive measure, but I'm not sure it was worth the cost of the kit because everything looked OK!

I'll never will be able to make it look like new, because the finish tends to get mottled and turn gray over the years, as you can see in the photo below. But after using lots of carb cleaner and scrubbing the nooks and crannies, at least it's super clean now.

The number on the lower left next to 1406 is 0784. I thought that meant July 84, but I doubt it's that old, so it must be something other than a date code. Although I did buy, rebuild, and sell several of them in the early 2000s.

apparently the first three digits are the julian day and the last is the last digit of the year. (guess it's up to you to know the decade).

I run an AVS2 on the 366 in my big truck, I'd recommend it for sure, the annular boosters really do help throttle response under normal driving conditions, even in such a heavy truck. Definitely get the insulating gasket, I have one and occasionally still have the boiled dry fuel bowl issue, a lot less when I run better gas though.
