49 rear gastank options?
I remember reading that you can put a rear mounted gas tank out of a 69 Camaro into the 47-52 truck frame in the rear?
Anyone done it?

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
A Camaro tank is right at 39.375 wide. That according to these measurements
Fuel Tank Length (in.): 39.375 in. Fuel Tank Width (in.): 20.875 in. Fuel Tank Height (in.): 7.750 in. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/t.../1969#overview As many times as I have measured the frames I don't remember the inside measurements off the top of my head. I can't actually read them off the image I saved off the assembly manual either.

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
I have done it too. I cut the filler neck and had it come up in the bed floor. You can get fuel hose from Summit Racing at the angle you need. This is what I used.

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
I used a Camaro tank in my 1/2 ton Suburban. I also modified the filler neck to come up straight thru the rear floor. Worked great. Marc

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
Thanks for all your help. Quick responses helped me snag a brand new Camaro tank on FB marketplace. New sending unit installed already. Tank straps too.
$95 and super local.

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
Here's a gen 2 Camaro tank in a '49 GMC - I run a roll pan and no bumper with the filler neck under the license plate. There's a 4"x4" .25" wall square tube at the end of the rear frame rail to protect the tank
The tank is for the Camaro with a big block, which has a vent/return that I used for my fuel injection return Here's the tank installed before the bed wood went in. There's enough room on either side to run the exhaust if you want to go out the back Here's a shot of the tank from the underside of the truck with the bed-wood installed Here's a shot of the rear of the truck so you can see how the tank tucks up to be flush with the roll pan - you can see a little bit of the tank, but this photo is taken at the level of the license plate. You can also see about 1/4" of the 4x4" crossmember. Neither one is visible with the truck on the ground |

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
Correction - I think there's only one Gen 2 tank for the Camaro - the extra vent comes with the fuel sender for the big block

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
How well does that filler neck being that low work with filling the tank though? It looks like you have modified the neck to get the filler lower and that may cause some real issues filling the tank.

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
The filler neck on my tank is unmodified - there's never been a problem filling the tank.
The problem is that I'm 67 years old now, and the truck is fairly low. I used to be able to squat/bend down pretty easily, but now it is just easier to go down on one knee to fill it |

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
I have seen a few modified to accept a filler on the rear fender. some nicely done, some farm/work truck look, some race car look with the bolt on flange around the outside, some that look like the stock cab filler except on the rear fender to look period correct. some have a door, some don't. the door ones are harder to get looking and fitting nice on an egg shaped surface. personal preference. personally I wouldn't put the filler in the box floor because I haul stuff. of course I would need to fill when there is something in the box, lol. also, the box floor sometimes means the filler hose needs to drag across the paint.
I remember as a kid at the filling station we had a guy with a 67-72 era chevy pick up and he had a rear tank with the filler behind the lic plate. when we seen it coming we would always try to get the other guy to run out and fill it up because it almost always burped back and got gas on the ground or your shoes. maybe some of the newer tanks have the anti siphon/roll over protection valve installed at the tank entrance of the tank? sometimes they are built into the tank filler hose and sometimes they are built right into the fill connection of the tank. |

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
I have seen a truck on here somewhere that utilised the bed stake pocket for a gas filler. the filler is up high so no chance of leaking or blowing back. it may fill slow though since the piping couldn't be very large.
has anybody used an S10 blazer tank? they have a side filler. just curious. |

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
for the life of me i dont understand the fascination with putting the filler in the bed floor. a friend had that setup in a 46 Chevy truck and everything in the box stunk of gas fumes each time it was filled. i would do everything in my power not to do that.
Also a 67-70 mustang tank will also slide right into the frame rails. Just an opinion, thats all. |

Re: 49 rear gastank options?
youngrodder, your filler is capped under the floor with an access door to the filler, correct? like a fuel fill door on the side of the vehicle on newer cars? that way the cap could vent or overflow a bit when filling but the fumes/gas would escape outside the cab? some bed floor fillers I have seen are like that and some are a filler tube coming through the floor with a simple cap at the bed floor level. some guys use a marine fuel tank filler as they are usually chromed or are finished nicely. they usually have a little chain or something inside the filler tube to keep the cap from getting lost as well. some also have the extra tube for the fill vent. some are flat with a special key to open, some are locking, some have a flip up lever to twist it open. they would look equally nice on a fender mount, an under floor mount or in the bed floor if thats what you are after. some marine places also sell the aesthetically pleasing access doors as well.
