87 dual tank selector switch ?

I finally got the ‘77 running with an LS swap. Been a long overdue project. Anyone have a pic of the mounting hole for the selector switch in the later trucks ? I am needing to put the newer style in my truck . My ‘77 came with the dual tank option but it mounts different than the ‘87 style I’m using for my conversion. If you have a pic of a naked dual tank dash that would be great. If you can post it with measurements that would be even better.
Thanks
Frank

Re: 87 dual tank selector switch ?

frank, nice to see you are still at it. I am finishing up a LS swap on my '86 and the truck had dual tanks . I switched out for the '87 "baffled" tanks and install a new tank valve along the frame for a '87 as well. In the dash I installed a factory '87 tank switch (supposedly can handle the voltage needed). Is the tank dash switch what you are looking for? is the dash opening for the switch different in the earlier years? if helpful... i can post a pic of the switch and give opening dims in my dash?

Hope this helps. The only one I could find when I had my dash apart.

That hole is exactly what I need dimensions of . I think 81-87 are the same . My 77 has a smaller square hole and 1/4 inch holes above and below . The early ones are different because they bolt in instead of snapping in . If you could take a couple pics of it with a tape measure showing length and width that would be great . It’s been a while since I worked on the trucks but I’m finally making time .

Re: 87 dual tank selector switch ?

Been trying to get a sketch with dimensions but computer will not cooperate this morning. Anyways I put this same switch in my 69. Slot is 1'' wide. Height is 1.440 and the notch at the top is an additional .220 tall by .545 wide. Hope this makes sense. I did not have to do the little side notches as it sits flat and is tight. I started out with a few drilled holes and sat patiently with a file until it fit the way I wanted it to

That is some good info right there and yes it makes sense . Thanks very much. I bought the dual tank harness that the old member GMachinz (?) sells and realized my hole was wrong this weekend.

Re: 87 dual tank selector switch ?

I made my own harness as my second tank on this truck sits between the frame rails behind the cab and I am still running the seat tank. I used all the 87+ parts

Re: 87 dual tank selector switch ?

Hey Frank, I thought I recognized your screen name from when I got on here 6 or 7 years ago. Glad you're back. With the pictures, if you use an iphone, the site likes it if you take the photos in landscape orientation with the bottom of the phone to the right if that makes sense. I could get you a dimension to the center of switch from the side of the ashtray opening if that would help. Not sure what I could pull a measurement off of in the vertical direction. Maybe from the center of that indented line above the switch that you can see in TKCR's photo?

Edit: I went back and looked at that photo, and I think that indented line is actually about where the bottom of the dash pad is when it is installed. So maybe I can pull a measurement from the bottom of the dash pad to the center of the switch if that would help.

I can take you a covered dash pic if you like on an 86. Just have to wait on the rain to let up tomorrow.

Re: 87 dual tank selector switch ?

Thanks for the info. My truck has dual tanks so there is an opening there already. I just have to modify it for the new style so that’s why I needed pics and measurements . I am going to open the hole this weekend and get that new switch mounted . I’ll try to do some before and after pics of the hole . I’ll use that iPhone position trick and see if I can get it right this time .

Re: 87 dual tank selector switch ?

I changed the dimensions a little . Bottom notch is shallower than kwmech because I didn’t want to get into that mounting hole .I opened the hole to the right (towards the ash tray) because of the curve in the dash on the other side. It fits pretty well I think. Thanks for getting me those pics and the dimensions .

Basic hole. I cleaned it up before mounting switch in it but didn’t want to remove switch just to get a better pic.
