I NEED TO SHIP A 1972 CHEVY 4X4 FROM CA TO VA ... ANYONE HAD ANY GOOD OR BAD AUTO SHIPPING EXPERIENCES?

I researched this a lot in 99. My haul was Boston to San Francisco.
I used a great transport agent in June 99 and was very pleased. She brokered me for a very small amount. She gave me options on price and timing and put me together with the guy who hauled for me. She got me picked up sooner than I expected and delivered sooner than expected and with no damage. Avoiding damage was more important to me than price. I was in touch with the driver to share what was important to me beforehand and also during tranport.

Don't know if she is still doing it but I'd use her as my agent again if she is. She called her business:

He was awesome. I don't know if he does any of his own bookings. I think most of it goes through third parties. If you have any questions, I'm happy to share what I've learned. I've also had vehicles moved inside moving vans.

Almost everyone I know who has tranported and chosen an open auto carrier has had damage to the vehicle. From bent metal to torn out exhaust to footprints on the hood and roof and more. The funniest was dropping a somewhat rusty Datsun Roadster and causing the frame to break due to it's condition. I chose to pay more and go enclosed.

I just used these guys to ship a 69 c10 from Kansas to North Carolina. Cost me $600 and they did a great job. Door to door in a covered one car trailer. They are actually a broker, so you never know who or how the move will take place. Good luck.
