Insurance Question

For the guys that have a classic truck that they only drive maybe once or twice a week...

Do you have regular insurance through a State Farm of GEICO type of company or through a Classic Car Insurance Company?

Just talked to State Farm, and they said that for classic car insurance on a 1972 Cheyenne insured for ~$8,000 would be $60/month. Have to be driven less than 5,000 miles per year (which is fine), and stored in a locked garage (fine also). But then she said I could only drive it to car shows and on the weekends, NOT TO WORK OR DURING REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS!! WHAT'S WITH THAT?!?!

I did a search online for Classic Car Insurance Companies and the first one that poped up was American Classic Insurance, Inc. I went through their online form and even with Liability and full collision insurance on an $8,000 vehicle, it comes to $60/YEAR!!! Of course their stipulations are 2,500 miles per year and storage in a locked garage, but NO limitations on how or where I choose to drive.

MY QUESTIONS:

1. What types of insurance do you guys have for NON daily drivers?
2. What are the more reputable of Classic Car insurance companies?

Thanks for the help!!

Paul

I have State Farm Also and I wanted to have insurance for it under the Classic insurance but then they told me if I want that I could only drive it in parades. No where else. So I am looking around also.

In Minnesota, there is a difference between 'classic' auto insurance and insurance on an older vehicle. A classic car gets you special liscense plates and has the stipulations on mileage and reasons for driving.
Insurance on an older vehicle is like your regular insurance, with the regular plates.

I have mine thru my regular ins company and just take it out for the summer, and have 'garage ins' for the winter.

jef5150, thanks for the link. Grundy will insure me for $95 per year with NO mileage limitations for recreational driving. Not a bad deal really.

Paul72, I wish we had winter and summer rates down here in Houston, TX. Unfortunately, it's summer almost all year round

Anyone else have insurance suggestions????

Something to think about... After I bought my '71 1/2 ton with 85,000 original miles I got only liability with State Farm. Well, at work several weeks later I guy backs into my truck and breaks the innner and outer grill, hood and front bumper. He had State Farm as well. I though I was doomed for trying to get any money. I took it to the adjuster a week later and they looked at the truck--all original. They sent me a check a week later for 1400 dollars! On the phone, the insurace manager said that they valued my truck at $4000. I could not believe it. My truck has only 4 or 5 options on the tag. As long as you don't cause the wreck, I guess your fine with regular insurance. This also happened to my friends, 66 Bel Air, which they (State Farm) totaled and sent him a check for $4000. He only had to replace the hood, grill, one fender and some tie rods!

insurance

i have checked out a few.

i don't know the number, but call Time Insurance here in austin. they offer american classics as well as another company. i got quoted about $65 a year and i believe the limit was 2500 miles a year, and that is for full coverage.

I pay about $120 a year for zero deductible, actual replacement cost insurance. Unlimited mileage. I do have to keep it in a locked garage and they had to see it to make sure they weren't insuring a beater as a classic.

This subject has come up before. If you do a search, you may get some more input on classic insurance.

One thing to consider about: all-state,farmers geico and american family...they don't have to put oem back on your vehicle. They will use aftermarket products first or if it's in a junk yard it will be used. State farm and AAA will use NEW oem products if available. My wife works in the body shop industry. She told me about this guy who had a 2 year old Ford Excursion that was wrecked and he had Farmers. Would you believe that Farmers wouldn't buy a new fender for the vehicle. The part came from a junk yard, which was slightly dented. The body shop was paid extra to remove the dent. Cheap bast_rds.

I have Grundy on both my 69 truck and 66 nova and find it to be the best I have found. Had a friend that had to make a claim on his classic insurance with them and had no problems.

i've done some research myself on some of the different insurers out there including grundy, chrome,....etc. and the best overall quote i've received was from my daily driver insurer ,state farm.no mileage limitations,an agreed value based on an official apprasier (valued at $10k),$250 deduct., a locked garage, and full coverage. it added an extra $12-$15 on my monthly payment plan option. this is also not a classic car insurance type of plan.....just an agreed value, based on an classic car/truck appraiser opinion for what i have done to my truck.
