Cigarette lighter usb mod
My cigarette lighter was dead so I got an aftermarket cigarette lighter assembly from Amazon, along with a marine style QC usb port and a usb port with an integral volt meter.
I cut a piece of sheet metal out of a framing protector plate from Home Depot (1/16" thick) and used the screw shell housing of the cigarette lighter to hold it in place. I also used a short lath screw in the upper left corner to keep it from moving around. I cut a hole in the sheet metal for the cigarette lighter and centered another hole in the opening where the ash tray was to accommodate the marine usb port. I used 12 ga wire line fuses for the usb port and cigarette lighter with 10 amp fuses. I used Wago lever nuts to attach the wires on the line fuses and taped the levers closed. The fuses are accessed by opening the glove box and pulling the line fuse cabling out from behind the dash. The original cigarette lighter wiring is apparently not fused. It took a while to find a usb adapter with a voltmeter which did not stick out and was not so wide that it prevented the ashtray door from closing. The marine usb port has a shutoff button so I shut it off when I am not driving the truck, and I pull the cigarette lighter adapter out slightly to disconnect it which still allows the door to close |

Re: Cigarette lighter usb mod
I'm all about this mod. We need it for the ball/ chain (cell phones) we are constantly attached to. I modified the dash to hide the USB and hold my big a** phone at the same time, haha.
