1972 C20 2 wheel drive GVW

I need a few pics of the GVW numbers on 1972 2 wheel drive C20 VIN tags. Your VIN number doesn't need to be in the pic just the GVW. Any help would certainly be appreciated. Happy Holidays!

Heavy Springs may have been part of the" Custom Camper Equipment ". Jocko most likely will be able to shed some light on that

Re: 1972 C20 2 wheel drive GVW

I’ve never seen a C20 (or K20) that was not 7500 lb GVWR - have had HO and D60 rear axles in them. But who knows. Had a 72 C20 with G50 Heavy Rear Spring and a K20 with G50 Heavy Rear Spring and F60 Heavy Front Spring - both were 7500 lb GVWR.

Interesting point jocko, but surely they all can't be 7500lb. AFAIK, if it had all the optional heavy duty equipment, it was rated at the max. 7500lb. For instance, Ford had a 6200lb, 6900lb and a 7500lb version of the F 250 during the same era, depending on the spring build up and tires.

Here's another with slightly different as manufactured vs max capability on the rear axle.

I certainly don’t disagree - I’d assume there are some different ratings out there, I’ve just never seen or owned one - so am very curious to see some new info (this was a great question Bones!). I’ve never even seen one with the lower as mfgr’ed # as posted above. Very interesting.

Re: 1972 C20 2 wheel drive GVW

It's going to depend on what tires and springs were on the truck when it was sold new.

As you can see here a C 20 could come with one of three gross weight capacities 6200, 6700 or 7500 depending on the wheel and tire combo and the rear springs that it has.

That found here in the 1972 Chevy truck PFD from the GM heritage center.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Do you have a specific question about how the GVWR works? It seems like it is typically something like this:
6200lbs - limited by base springs or base tires (3980lbs)
6700 lbs - upgraded rear springs (G50), limited by upgraded rear tires (4880lbs)
7500lbs - upgraded springs (G50), max upgrade tires, limited by rear end (5500 lbs) or other component

There are some variations in the "max rear weight at ground" if alternate tire/spring combinations were ordered.

I've posted it on the 47/59 group before but you can find the pfd for most years by scrolling down this list from the GM Heritage center archives https://www.gm.com/heritage/archive/...tion-kits.html

Re: 1972 C20 2 wheel drive GVW

I’ve owned 4 different C20’s. The 69 GMC didn’t have the GVWR listed on it’s tag. The others were 6200 GVWR for a 127” wb, 6 cylinder 3 speed and 4.57 gears. A Longhorn 133” wb with 350, SM465 with a 6600 GVWR and a 400/TH400 127” wb with 7500 GVWR.
