1967 short fleet rescue

I had an opportunity to buy a neglected 1967 swb back in the summer. It was just a body with only the hood and radiator support in the bed. I brought it home and, for those that know me, immediately installed white walls and hubcaps! I also dropped in a 67 model 250 L6 and Powerglide (truck was originally 6 cyl, 3 speed). I searched and searched for front fenders and ended up driving 2 hours one way to get a nice set of red ones. I didn't want to do a full blown paint job on the truck, so I bought a few cans of dark hunter green spray paint and shot the front fenders, then lightly sanded to expose the red paint underneath. It looked OK from a far distance, but the different colored greens were getting to me. At this point I made the decision (unpopular to some, I'm sure) to spray bomb the whole truck. I wet sanded the paint and, like on the fenders, sanded through to expose the red oxide primer underneath.

Re: 1967 short fleet rescue

Looks good from my house.
In the 70s our shop teacher brought us a 67 Ford swb to repaint. It had a splendid brush paint job. No dents or rust. We worked in teams of 3 and Steve said, hey lets sand and buff a panel. We did and it looked great. Did the whole truck that way and the teacher was happy.

Re: 1967 short fleet rescue

To be quite honest here, with all the critical comments and junk.
Your truck
Looks AMAZING!
When I was a kid, our neighbor across the road would paint his farm truck about every other year, with a brush, and a different color every time.
The color you chose is perfect.
My two favorite colors for 67-68 are your Dark Green and Red (color of my Dad’s 68).

By the way, what tire size is that? I bought a 67 SWB back in the summer and that looks like a nice size for that truck. Thanks, Dave

Re: 1967 short fleet rescue

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the comments! As bad as the first picture looks, it is actually a pretty solid truck, just needed a little facelift. If you look close in the first pic, you'll see a 5 lug disc brake front end. I put the correct 6 lug back under it and had to do brakes on all 4 corners.

Getter-Done - I plan on keeping this one for a little while. But... I've said that before too!

dave6672 - tires are 235/75/15.

I like the simple approach you took. That paint will fade nicely. Guys who want patina just need to use rattle can and wait for the sun to do the rest.

I'm curious how you did the tailgate. Looks 1000% better and the letters look original

Thanks! The tailgate letters were faded just right and I knew I couldn't re-create that. I applied painter's tape over the letters and painted the rest of the gate green. Before I did this, I sprayed red primer on the body lines and then shot the green to it. I sanded hard on the body lines to give the appearance of faded paint. You can see it better in this picture:

Joshua, I'd like to nominate you for "RESCUE OF THE YEAR" even tho there's no such thing.
And adding special touches such as 67 only knobs, and lots of other things that we'll never even know about.... awesome!

Re: 1967 short fleet rescue

I could complain about the spray bomb, but honestly, how many guys did that 30-40 years ago on these trucks? A lot.
My point is it's still a lot of work. Looks good to me.

My only gripe is: why powerglide? Actually, For some reason I have found that 3-on-the-tree transmissions are very easy to find still in the truck....
But if you need a spare to put into a project like yours, they're nowhere to be found...

Have a great day and enjoy that truck, we all know they're becoming more uncommon.

Every truck taken out of a barn/field/backyard and put on the road deserves that award.
