A Vent for the Cowl Vent - Problem Solved!
A while back I posted a question about venting my cab (project Fargolet) to allow better operation of the cowl vent. The issue was that while the original cowl vent worked like a charm, it required cracking open a window to get the air to really flow well. The noise from the open window was horrendous, and it was right at ear level.
Here is the finished gizmo, which sits under the seat (seat bottom removed in the pic): It's just a gate valve meant for RV use (dsraven’s idea) with the addition of a critter screen (leegreen’s idea). The gate valve is controlled by a push/pull knob at the base of the seat base. The results are fantastic! When I open the valve I get tons of air coming through the cowl vent to cool me off, with only a minute amount of noise as the air is now exiting the cab under the seat where it is nicely muffled. any heat/fumes come up from there if you are stopped in traffic? |

interesting idea. I do like the ability to close the vent. Did you consider using a vent in the rear of the cab behind the seat like late model trucks use?

Leegreen: I have not yet noticed any odours/fumes etc while stopped. My tailpipe exits the rear of the truck and the engine is a modern 4.3 V6 which spews no odours (unlike my ‘56 TF with the worn out 235 and draft tube system). As for traffic, the nearest town to me only has 3 traffic lights!
Nvrdone: I didn’t want to carve a hole into the cab, or deal with the interior panels that cover the rear of the cab so I opted for the gate valve. Plus there is the charm of the quirky things that my old truck has (like the crank-out windshield and lever activated cowl vent), so now I have another cool lever to work! |

I do like the idea. Im guessing you get plenty of air flow with the windows closed. I have a sliding rear window and with the vents open, rear window open and door windows closed the air flow is not bad.

and now, the the next installment, you could install a plumbing T with one open side facing forward and a small restriction at the actual T. that would create a venturi as air flows through and improve the air flow as you drive.
