engine swap question
What all will have to be done to swap from an inline 6 to a 350??? Are the existing motor mounts the same?? Thanks.

You will need a set of V8 stands you can look at the six stands the the V8 ones and see the difference Here is a link where i have some pics the V8 stands place the motor alot further foward

I hadn't even thougth of that. I'm posting this question for a kid I know. His v-6 mounts looked similar but I didn't know there was a difference.

A whole lot of people have put small blocks on the v6 mounts. It sets the motor back and puts the distributor very close to the firewall, especially with an HEI. Depending on what distributor you are running it does work though.

is this a V-6, or an inline,? you've indicated both.
If it is a V-6, I think you can use the old towers, I have been told mine are V-6 towers, and I would believe it since that's what my truck had originally. If it is an inline...I think the 250 towers can be retained....and only the odd ball forward mount on a 292 needs to be swapped. Nothing wrong with setting the engine in the inline position, esp if hooking up to original 3 or 4 speed manual tranny. Much easier that way, plus no drive shaft mods. A 4X4 fan shroud will work perfectly up front if small block is in the inline location. |

I'm sorry, it's an inline 6. He is wanting to keep his four speed manual and I had been wondering about the driveshaft deal and stuff also.

If it is a 250, then just yank it out and stab the small block into the exact same location.

I just did the swap 4 weeks ago. Here is a pic to show how close an HEI sits to the fire wall
and here is how far back the engine sits It is a direct drop into place swap if you use the inline 6 stands.

That looks like about where the motor sits in my 70 four wheel drive. The fram has three holes right for the motor placement?? My other buddies 72 uses the front two and mine uses the back two. I guess that would be alright though.

all the 4x4's from this era are situated in the rear position or inline 6 position in a 2wd truck. Yeah there are 3 holes for the inline spot and 3 for the V8 spot and are all pre drilled into the frame and cross member

Don't forget about the old wire from the dist to the starter has to be removed with the HEI......
Keep us posted with pics of transplant....might help other members....

Okay, does anybody know what headers will fit?? It has a 4 speed tranny with the manual z link clutch linkage.

Hooker comps fit my 69 when I put a 350 in the 6 cyl place. All of the clutch linkage fit fine, but you need a clutch pivot ball that screws into the V8 block. It's different than the 6 cyl one.
