optima batteries - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Just put a brand new stereo system in and have come to the conclusion that I need more juice to run everything. I have been looking at those optima batteries but don't know if I should shell out that much money for one or possibly two. I'm going to replace the alternator also. Does anybody have any suggestions on what I should do? I it sits right now, is that when I have my stereo on with some pretty good bass and my lights are on, it cuts out the stereo completely and the voltmeter practically reads the lowest it can.

I like mine. Use a 4gauge wire from the alt. to the battery too.

Buy a high amp altermator for sure. The Optima batteries are good, but they won't do much without something to keep them charged up. I recommend a Powermaster 140 amp. I have one and it's killer.

I have a Delco 78 month dual terminal battery in my 84. It's been there since July 97. Never a problem and it's still going strong. I wouldn't think of buying anything else.

I'v got optima bat's in both of my truck's if you do get one get the yellow top it's a deep cycle and most big stereo system guy's use them.

Here's a ? for you. Are you running a power pully on your truck?

If so remove it and reinstall the stock pully that will cure the problem you mention.

If not then do what the other's recommended along with a new bat.

Optimas are the best but keep one thing in mind.........you need more power overall and batteries don't make the power, they just store it. Get a bigger alternator like mentioned and the Optima and you should be set.
