I upgraded to an aftermarket box that has a different spline count than original. Double D bar and 2 u joints. It was pretty simple. Both items are stainless steel. I also had to change columns since the 67/68 columns have in intermediate shaft. The 18” DD bar was about $50 and the joint were $125 each. I just bought them at my local speed shop. I would imagine that they are available just about anywhere. Ive been running the exact same setup on my 72’ Blazer for about 6 years with no issues.

Re: Custom intermediate steering shaft idear's
This looks like a really nice setup and I bet it works great. But it's not collapsible if you're in an accident that steering wheel has very little give as where the stock unit will collapse a few inches anyway.

Re: Custom intermediate steering shaft idear's
You are correct as far as 69-72 goes. But in 67-68 the factory steering shaft is one continuous piece from wheel to rag joint. I’d love to use a collapsible shaft, but as far as im aware there is no aftermarket piece. Which means that every truck with an updated steering box or aftermarket column has a solid intermediate shaft. Are you aware of any other options?

Re: Custom intermediate steering shaft idear's
My 68 has a collapsible one. As far as I know it is original but it may not be. It is at least a oem shaft. My truck had a lot of damage done at one time. Back half of frame replaced and back of cab has been cut and replaced at some time. Must have been in a pretty bad rear ender. Maybe the steering shaft was replaced as well. It is the type where it has the rag joint at the bottom collapsible shaft and flexible joint at the top where it bolts to steering column.

Borgeson is the best way to go if you're getting away from stock

Re: Custom intermediate steering shaft idear's
I have an intermediate shaft for a 72 if that will help you. I also have the 3/4” intermediate which will work in the 67 & 68.

Re: Custom intermediate steering shaft idear's
The square body guys are using xj jeep intermediate shafts (some are using astro van shafts). I'm thinking any 3/4" shaft with the 36 spline coupler could be adapted to work but I have never tried it (yet).

Re: Custom intermediate steering shaft idear's
I just built one of these out of borgeson u-joints/telescoping shaft. Here are the part numbers, only difference you may have is that my steering box is a red head which is 13/16 spline vs 3/4 which is believe was stock. So you may have to adjust accordingly but it is easy to find on summit. Shaft is easy to trim to size.
