I stopped at a local auto electric shop yesterday. I had never stepped foot in the place before because a close friend had a shop that I used for over thirty years. He retired recently so I had to look for another place to go for repairs. I took my external regulated alternator in because the bearings needed to be replaced. He quoted me $65.00 to do the job. I was impressed with the professional approach the owner displayed. If anyone needs a repair on a starter or alternator I would highly recommend this shop. Located in Island City Oregon…Jack

I was beginning to think that I posted this for nothing ! Yes these shops are no longer around in most areas. LaGrande had two for decades until the owner contracted Parkinson’s. He also never taught anyone unlike the shop I mentioned in my original post. Brody was taught by the previous owner starting when he was a student in high school. His workmanship is outstanding. He just rebuilt the starter on my Honda ATV. I will reach out and confirm he can do out of area work.

I will vouch for a PMX Alternator here in Portland. They have done a couple of alternators for me. They are kind of hard to find but worth the trip. Had the alternator on the old ladies Lexus take a dump I was looking at $300 plus to replace it. It was $93 to repair it at PMX. New bearings, new regulator, new brushes, and all nice and clean.

I used to rebuild my own. I took the alternator off my truck to rebuild it (only because the front bearing was noisy) but couldn't get the bearing out of the drive end frame. I was afraid it would break. Bought a no-core rebuild and it took until the third try to get a good one. Good reason to find a local shop who does them! They probably have parts in a pile, for when they try to press the bearing out and the frame breaks. Better luck next time, I guess. I still have the "original"-I'm guessing- alternator.
