Hood Springs
Hi, I just installed the hood on my 57 pickup and remembered the springs seemed weak so I installed a set of new reproductions springs. The problem is they don't hold the hood up very well. Was this a common problem on these trucks? Thank You Steve

Re: Hood Springs
new springs should be more than plenty strong to hold up a hood.
i've seen guys undercoat the underside of the hood and it makes the hood to heavy anything on the underside like bedliner or a gallon of bondo/filler?

? I can't remember where I got the springs but if someone knows which ones they used and worked it would be helpful. Steve

Re: Hood Springs
I have new springs and no filler with new paint on both sides and mine stays up fine on my 59 GMC.
Did you install new hinges or lubricate? I may have gotten mine from LMC or classic industries.

Re: Hood Springs
Hi, These are original hinges I bead blasted and painted. When I got the truck the hood barely stayed up on its own. I bought a set of springs and it seemed the same. I just ordered another set of springs OER brand and will see if it makes a difference. Thank You for the information. Steve

Re: Hood Springs
My hood does the same thing. I replaced the springs as well, with new ones, and it will not stay open. I gave up and use a wood prop to hold it open.

Re: Hood Springs
paint and a little filler shouldn't be a problem. dennislbrooks and my 58 TRUK both have different hinges and springs than the 55-57 trucks, maybe you have the 58-9 springs? call LMC and ask about their hood springs, buy and install within the return window

Re: Hood Springs
Update on this thread. I received the OER brand hood springs today. Got them installed and the hood stays up fine now. I don't remember what springs I bought originally. The OER brand worked so I am happy. Steve

Re: Hood Springs
Not sure if this helps, but the 55 and 56 Chev cars are the same hinge, however the spring is heavier on the 56 because of the extra weight added to the hood because of chrome pieces. I wonder if that's true of the trucks. The hinges maybe the same but you could get a heavier spring. Just a thought
