1969 396 engine completely rebuilt

I live in Cooperstown NY. Asking 6250. (Lowered to 5950. on Nov. 30. 2024) for the engine. I have the receipt for this exact amount to rebuild it.

This 396 engine was in my 1969 GMC 2500 Longhorn truck and I had it totally rebuilt but it has never been installed. I decided to not finish the restoration of this truck so the engine alone is now for sale.

If you are planning to put this into a 67-72 GM truck I have all sorts of parts that bolts onto this engine: complete PS brackets pump and hoses, engine mounts, engine stands, new alternator etc.

Here is what was done by a professional rebuild by Alan Steere:
- Degreased
- Decks squared to main
- Lifters bored out and enlarged to .875
- Bored and honed, .030 over square to the main
- Block was deck-plated when honed and bored
- Re-surfaced cylinder heads (Original heads) .010
- Connecting rods magnafluxed and resized with new bolts
- Crankshaft 10 + 10 (uses oversize bearings).
- Balanced rotating assembly
- New SS valves, 3 angle valve job
- New pistons, rods and main bearings
- New cam, lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, timing chain and gears, oil pump and screen. All blueprinted.
- Cam specs: @.050 duration 210 degrees on intake, 215 degrees on exhaust, , valve lifters .440 on both, and 114 degrees separation angle.
- New valve spring locks and retainers
- Heads milled .010
- File fit the rings
- New fly wheel and flex plate
- New harmonic balancer
- Pre-lubed and then run for 30 minutes on engine stand (Video avaliable)
- Then changed the oil again.

NOTE: I am not an engine guy. I just paid to have all this done to this original 1969 396 engine. Original heads used. But if you need to know the brand of certain parts you will have to talk to the guy who built the engine. Alan Steere of Schuyler Lake NY. Alan has been building GM engines for racing use as well as everyday use for decades and there were no shortcuts on this engine.
Video now available. Text me your phone number and I can send you a video of it running. The video is one minute long.

Re: 1969 396 engine completely rebuilt

Someone out there is thinking of putting a big bock into their small block truck. Buy this engine and it includes all the parts to make that happen. And please feel free to make an offer. Price is lower than what is cost to have the work done.

Re: 1969 396 engine completely rebuilt

HOw low should I go? Or do people just no longer want an original 396? I wish I had a truck to put it in. A nice clean one that only needed an engine swap.

How low do you think I should go/ Does anyone even want a 396 anymore? Or have LS swaps replaced them?

Re: 1969 396 engine completely rebuilt

csting number is 3955272. Stamping on engine block pad is T0227 YQ which refers to a 396 installed in a 1969 C20 and the build date was February 27 (0227). I may have a photo of the casting date on the block but the photos I have are quite illegible bt I will post a few. And I am not really sure if they are the correct casting that you need.

I’m referring to the last two numbers on the pad at the front of the engine block. I need them to be XG for ‘68 C10 396 4 bbl automatic, instead of YQ.

Not very, dog gone many!!!

There was a young guy on here, been a while. Asking questions about a big block (68-72, not sure which) that he had. He wasn't getting too many responses. He was getting impatient. Someone her, or maybe me explained that 396/402 engines were not very common, at all, in these pickups. He did not like that response, he thought that, FOR SURE, there were as many big blocks as there were small blocks manufactured.......

My 70 C-30 would love the upgrade. Running a Standard SBC in it now.

It might be possible for me to deliver the engine. That is if I can fit it into my Subaru Outback. .

It could be shipped. I think it weights around 700 pounds. It woiuld require a very sturday palette. and while I can pick it up with an engine crane or a chainhoist in the shop, it would be tough to get it onto a delivery sort of truck. Myabe you would know more about these things?

Re: 1969 396 engine completely rebuilt

Don't mean to get in the middle of your conversation, but I just had a small block engine shipped from PA to GA through Fastenal for $207. The other guy got it to a Fastenal store near him on a pallet, then I picked up at my local store here in GA.

Thank you for your comments. I have used Fastenal in the past for a tailgate. They did a good job and that seems to be a reasonable price for shipping your engine. I could probably do that if someone was serious. It would definitely require a sturdy palette.

Defiantly an idea, I've never used Fastenal for shipping. Very interested, wished I could pursue this, but with Christmas at hand I can't do anything at the moment. If this still available after the holidays, let's try and work something out. I will PM you with my phone number for the video.

PM and video sent. Please take your time with everything related to the Holidays. There are more important things than engines. But this is truly a nice engine. If I had the right truck to put it into I would not hesitate to use it.
