1970 C10 broken 4x4 shifter

I have a chance to purchase a well used non running C20 4x4 truck that has a broken 4x4 shifter. Could not test dry shifting because of broken 4x4 shifter so can’t tell if transfer case shifting is operational or not. Standard 4 speed shifter did shift ok. Wondering if these np205 transfer cases have a history of becoming tight or what might cause shifter to become broken at connection at transfer case?

They are as tough as any transfer case is, but anyone who is careless can still destroy them. There is a link on the shifter that can break and fall off. A visual inspection is required. Unless it was run out of oil, or was driven on dry hard surfaced roads for extended periods in 4wd, I would be shocked if the case is destroyed internally.

What exactly defines broken handle? The shifter is basically a bent steel rod. I can’t see how the shifter would break. Are you sure it’s not an issue with the pivot bolt? Did the casting the bolt threads into break? The 205’s are well sought after for being damn near bomb proof, even at 50+ years old they are still the king in my book.

Re: 1970 C10 broken 4x4 shifter

As mentioned it was broken at the connection to transfer case. Not sure if it’s just the connecting bolt or if threads are also damaged in the case? But in either case would this have been caused by something wrong inside the case is what I’m wondering?

Due to different tire sizes front to rear, the drivetrain could have been bound up, and someone forced the shifter and damaged it.

berghandler, here are a couple of our old archived/saved folder pics on the subject area showing the NP205 t/c shift lever, shift rail and shift link rod parts. If you end up needing the NP205 t/c shift link rod, we have an OE used one available for purchase in the below linked parts board f/s thread. Have a look and let us know, Mel

Best transfer case ever made. Bomb proof, but not idiot proof. I've seen some neglected ones grenade in my time.

To the OP, here is a link to a couple pics that show how the shifter bolts to the top of the NP205. It's one bolt. So if the casting is broken or stripped, it could be the problem.

Or simply the bolt could be missing.

The little rod from the shift lever to the rails could be broken, don't ask me how I know this can happen lol.
