Is it hard to remove the inside cab heater box from under the dash?

I would like to remove the heater box inside the cab from under the dash in my 1968 C10 so I can clean it out, paint it and replace the ducts. My truck did not come with AC.

Is it difficult to remove that heater box from under the dash?

The problem is that some of the nuts and screws are installed from the inside and some of the nuts and screws are installed from the outside so you have to be able to get to both sides. No problem with the inside but some of the ones on the outside are hard to get to without removing the inner fender panel.

So it is probably a good thing that I already have the engine bay heater box removed already.

I have done this before, and it's not too bad. I don't remember exactly how it went, but I believe there are a couple of speed nuts you have to remove from the engine side of the firewall. There is also a screw in the middle of the firewall that you remove from the inside. Detach the defroster ducts from the heater box. I think it is easier to detach the heater control from the dash and leave it and the cables attached to the heater box during removal. The heat blend door cable is a bit of a pain to deal with since that blend door is on the outside of the firewall. You can detach that cable from the side of the inner heater box to give you some slack when unhooking it from the blend door. The wiring can be unplugged from the fan switch and the resistors and left in the truck.

Originally that post had a push on retainer clip on it and if it is still there they can be a pain to remove.

Here is how I remove the clips from the heater cables.

I'm putting mine together now and if you have engine bay side out your home free. just label where the cables go. Also a good time to stick a vacuum hose down your fresh air vents to clear out all the old leaves "now compost" stuck down in the bottom plugging up your drain holes.
