1953 GMC Longbed resto help
Hi Guys i have a 1953 GMC Long bed of a friend here.. the truck was for a long time in paint jail and was completely disassembled.
After the usual bad experience of getting his project completed my friend asked me to help him out with putting it back together... Motor and trans are a 228 with a 3 on the tree GM 341 trans. the motor runs good after upgrading to HEI and now we fitting a CLIFFORD Intake/ Headers with Weber 38 carburetor. we facing a Column shift clearance issue, hitting the manifold... My friend is considering anyways a Floor shift conversion . I found that the Clutch linkage is fully missing... actually the linkage between the Clutch pedal engagement bracket, to the clutch fork linkage Is there a source to buy this bracket ? i also measured the distance and see no clearance issues, to use/build my own linkage with Heim joints to actually have adjustment. Further If converting to floor shifter which unit would you suggest there is several HURST units i was recommended the https://www.summitracing.com/parts/huu-3667271 which would need a linkage kit as well i assume this : https://www.summitracing.com/parts/huu-3670010 or the Hurst Indy https://www.holley.com/products/driv.../parts/5010016 Yes i have a bench seat and so it should clear the bench . Any insight and expereince will help Last edited by Sebambam; 01-05-2025 at 03:47 PM. |

Re: 1953 GMC Longbed resto help
A search shows that the truck trinket vendors sell new ones for 11 or 12 bucks or you can buy a rusty used one on Ebay for 20.
Or the photo can show what you are looking for. I think those things are like the panels that cover the bottom hinge on the inside of the doors in that they grow feet and run away soon after they are removed from the rig and stuck in a "safe" place.

Thank you for the help.
The search is giving me crazy results since I didn't know what it looks like, or the official name. |

Re: 1953 GMC Longbed resto help
before spending any cash on a shifetr upgrade i suggest to look inside the old transmission first. no use spending cash and time plus cutting the floor to install a shifter on a trans that is ready to fail. not saying it is, just saying check it first.
i had a floor shifter on a 63 GMC 3 spd. it ate room in the seat area and was a bit finnicky. plus too short for a truck in my opinion. i had a long shifter knob and it was still kinda short. longer handles mean longer throw/movement of the lever to shift. if i would have had the original 3 on the tree i woud have gone back to it. just my 2 cents though. |

Yes i understand and i agree. i reached out to CLIFFORD and Larry basically said the only clearance solving option is a floor shifter. The trans supposed to be in good running condition. i am waiting on the Clutch rod to come in so i can engage teh clutch and "shift" to confirm the funtionality. After i will go for a HURST Mastershift setup. The good thing is the 53 has the service panel and so i dont have to do to much cutting |
