Patina.. For those that have done it?

My father bought this truck in 94.. It had just went thru a resto right before he bought it.. Normal dents/dings/scratches. But the overall gloss and paint is decent.Due to it being garage kept all those years... After looking at this truck for 30 years in red though. I cant help but think about it being a different color... I did not know at the time of us starting this resto 3 years ago, That the truck would become mine.. Otherwise I would have came at this differently. So I thought about going the patina route and was curious what your guys thoughts were? And any tips on how to tackling this idea if I choose to go forward.

Re: Patina.. For those that have done it?

OK my .02?
I think fake patina is a fad like the one color paint fad on street rods in the 80's. All one color including the bumpers.
Now real patina can be kind of cool. I help at a body shop couple days a week. They just finished a 72 C10 that came out of the NM desert. It had serious patina. The owner just had us sand the rough areas and flat clear the whole truck. Looked good. Not for me but it did look good.
Your red truck looks good. Maybe you plan on keeping it forever but I think a fake patina will hurt the value of your truck.
Again just my .02 and its your truck so do what ever you want to do.

Re: Patina.. For those that have done it?

The truck looks pretty good! if it were mine, in an attempt to make it different i would be tempted to put this side moldings on 'er and two-tone it.

edit: step side. dang. you could do it with the grille and roof?

I have thought of two toning it... Just never landed on which way to go.. The cab, body lines maybe? Grille is a good option too

Q qWhite roof, white grille, and some factory style pin stripes. Sort of like this. But I don't think the lower white stripe would work on a step side.

.

Red '68 stepper. What's not to like? I think it's just super the way it is...maybe lower the rear a bit more?

It's really nice man...but I have to admit it looks very much like my '68 stepper from the late 80s...indeed. What does the inside look like?

This is the correct answer. Just clean it up, and drive that baby.

Re: Patina.. For those that have done it?

Fake patina never looks good. Feels like stolen Valor to me, lol.

Just throwing in a vote for 2-tone! Changing it up as "your truck" is a great way to keep excited about it. If the paint is still nice, have you looked into wrapping options?

Re: Patina.. For those that have done it?

What do you folks have against a single red color C10? Just kidding.
Here's my 68 C10 with the side moldings. I drove it for the first year without. Adding the molding really woke up the trucks looks wise.

Nothing! Both yours and the OP's are beautiful.

I just suggested other looks instead of the patina look (which I'm not a fan of) since indicated he wanted a change.

Leave it red but paint the top and grille black. Also the bumpers and steps.

Re: Patina.. For those that have done it?

Just a note in regards changing to a fleet side all my box parts with the exception of the tail gate were aftermarket. The box sides needed a bunch block sanding but turned out well.
I went with a wood bed kit. GA pine.

Re: Patina.. For those that have done it?

Don’t fix what’s not broken. What a great truck. Just drive it to every show you possibly can attend. I don’t know what your life looks like, but I’ve got a ton of other things that are REALLY broken that need my time and effort…

If you really want to spend some time and effort on the truck do a paint correction and make the red look even better.

And IMO, patina is something that time and nature do, not mechanics.
