Shop Layouts

Anybody got any good idea for workshop layout. I do a lot of home remodeling and working on my 70 lwb. My garage is 2 car and I need to organize my truck parts from my woodworking stuff. Anyone got some ideas on how to do it.

sounds like you need to build on if you plan on using the garage for actually storing a vehicle even part time...

my buddy spends so much time in the garage, he built in a woodburning stove and a 3 piece batchroom....
naked chick posters, bathroom, beer fridge, trucks, tools...who would want to leave?

I've got the same problem.

Just built a 1200 sq ft shop.....trying to figure it out.

Already had two wood stoves donated since it is long rather than wide or square.

I also do woodworking, so I have to figure that into the plan........

Get some peg board and some 2x2s and srew it to the walls. Hang all your tools on pegs. You can make some benches out or some 2" angle iron and some 1" MDF

I built a 36x60 shop and now its too full. I have 2 working bays and the rest is storage.

I went to a garage sale and bought 18 - 4ft lights complete with bulbs for $3 ea. couldn't pass that up..........

Blue Beard, With a busted up back I need to sit down every 20 minutes or so. My daughter in-law gave me the rocker for a shop warming gift.
The red and white car in the corner is my 56 wagon.

nitne, you only using half of the 2 car garage? if so you could build shelves for your woodworking stuff then other shelves for your truck parts...put one set towards the garage doors other towards the back of the garage, then put a work bench between the 2. With vise and grinder or whatever... could run a power outlet (the kind with the box of outlets that hang from the ceiling).. and put some shop lights over the bench. just an idea to use current space, rather than building a new shop.

Cool Ideas, Awesome shop Oldiron. I would kill for something that big, just no way to do on my 1/2 acre lot. I was wondering about tool layout and the like, I just found something in Fine woodworking tools and shops magazine that I might try to do. My shop is so full right now I don't know where anything is. I am sooooo Afraid I am gonna loose some important parts. Oh well, I will let you know what I come up with.

oldiron, if you need more space, I'd be happy to oblige by taking some of that "oldiron" off your hands.
nitne, one idea I'm working on (and have been for years) is to make shelfs/tool storage areas on the wall similar to cabinets. But instead of having seperate doors make one big door and hinge it at the bottom. Maybe in 4 or 5 foot lengths. Attach some square tubing or 4 x 4's for outboard legs that folds in. That way when the door comes down you have a work bench also. But when closed hides all the clutter and leaves valuable floor space. You still have space underneath for stuff. I don't know if I explained this well enough but hopefully you get the picture. They could be any depth and height you want. just remember when you shorten the height you shorten the depth of your work bench.

Just got the new 24 x 50 garage built. 2 18' roll up doors with a wide area between them with a walkin door, leaves plenty of room for the riding mower, and all the gardening stuff that was in my shop, which is 24 x 30. am setting up the 24 x 20 area with tools, benches, beer frig, pop frig, engine hoist, etc. The 24 x 10 shop area will get straightened out next with oven for powdercoat, washer/dryer stackable (wife won't let me wash shop rags in hers anymore!) shelving, blasting cabinet, parts washer, and all the other stuff thats clogging up my work area.

A stupid question ..but how are you going to keep the sawdust off everything else when you are woodworking?

Thats exactly what I was going to comment on. I would add a 1/2 car section onto the existing 2 car section with a walk though door. That way you wont have to worry about the sawdust.

As far as tool organization, I have yet to figure that one out for myself.

I used white pegboard on the entire back wall, and have installed a librarians type ladder since this pic was taken so that I can hang stuff on the wall up to the top.

nitne, Go to your library and pick up a copy of Ultimate Auto Workshop Design & Planning by David Jacobos, Jr. Published by MBI Publishing. It has many ideas. Some high buck but, also alot of low buck ideas. The pictures that 67 Chevelle posted have some great ideas of a well laid out shop. As for the dust build a vacuum system for your power tools. It will keep the dust down some what.

It's tight with an attached garage but works for now.
