what causes this????
when i turn the headlights on the fuel gauge will read empty?any ideas

I would check some gounds. Always seems when somethimg weird is going on with the wiring, it almost allways points to a ground. I would check to see if the headlight switch is grounded good and check the instrument panel too.

I had one truck that had the fuel wire spliced into the tail light circuit.......

You need a headlight switch that gets better gas mileage
The fuel gauge works off ground the more its grounded the more it registers Might try a good ground from battery to frame a good ground from tank to frame and another from rear crossmember on the bed to frame i find that there is no such thing as too many grounds. |

Just find a screw easy to get to and run a wire from it to a screw on your dash.
