205 ID
On the back there will be a small cover in the middle with 3 bolt holding it on as follows (right next to the fill plug):

The SM465 I believe has PTO covers on both sides, but I'm trying to remember there is another way for easy ID.

I am trying to figure out how to ID these too-I'm new to 4x4 stuff but I've had a few of these trucks(2wd)
the truck is 80 miles away so... I'm getting a 71 or 72(not real sure but I know they are mostly the same those 2 yrs) I'm pretty sure it has the (original)205 transfer (what are the chances it could be anything else?) the trans is a "granny" 4 speed(original) I'm told-would this be the 465? is this a 4 speed + lower gear or a 3 speed + lower? now for the tough decision-a part of the deal is I can swap in a TH-350 with it transfer case(from a later model truck)-or leave the current setup in--but--It has to be one or the other-the guy wants to keep one tranny/transfer setup but it doesn't matter which(but I'd have to do the swap) I guess what it comes down to is can the newer parts possibly be as tough as the original stuff?and would it be worth the hassle?

BUT to answer your quetstion, there are 4 total gears... Sometimes the knobs are stamped L-1 2-3-R but, technically its still a damned 4spd!!! LOL Quote:
If its an even newer truck, after they switched from NP203 the case will be even weaker... (READ: CRAP) -Marty |

the 205 will also have 2 rods running into the case , these are the shifter rails , where the shifter connects , where as a 203 will have 2 arms that rods connect to , the three bolt plate on the back is a dead give away , now the 4 spd could also turn out to be an sm420 which are alot rarer than the 465, the 420 has a lower crawl ration , really popular with rock crawlers , my favorite tranny transfer combo is a th400 and a 205 , ive ran 465's with a big tire " 44" boggers and i didnt like it , ive had some th400s that pulled harder than any sick ive everbeen in , still got one thatll shift hard enough to break youre neck when it hits 3rd. i love that tanny , it all depends on how they are built and who bvuilds them , some people know what they are doing and some dont ,
