Unhappy What a weekend!!!

Well I knew i was getting myself into it this weekend when I'd be putting on my first set of rocker panels. I'd never done bodywork before but I was doing it at a college and had a guy with a lot of knowledge helping me out. Problem was after I took off the outer rocker the inner rocker panel towards the back of the cab was crustified and rotted. so I spent the next 6 hours cutting and welding and grinding and cutting.....well you get the point. Well my time limit ran out up at the shop and we had to leave but I didn't have the rocker panel in yet and the door was still off. I tried putting the door on but I couldn't get the dang thing lined up so I said what the hell it's nice today and it's only 20 miles to my house so I'll just drive with no door. Got some funny looks going down the highway for sure with no door. Well got home and went to a buddies house that had a welder and finished putting on the outer rocker and then was finally able to get the door put on so went home got showered up had a beer at a buddies house then went to bed. WEll then I woke up at about 1:30 in the morn and can't see a damn thing. It felt like i had something in my eye I tried flushing it out with water and then eye drops but it wasn't working so off to the ER I go. I got up there and the wife told em i had been welding so they automatically assume i burn my eyes. So they give me some eye drops to kill the pain and then they gave me a shot of morphine in my rearend that stuff works good mind you. well I got 2 days off of work now which is good but then again i jacked up my eyes. Well I hope everybodies weekend went a little smoother than mine have a good week ladies and gents ps sorry for the long post

Do NOT do like those idiots on Monster Garage. Wear a hood! Put raw potatoes over your eyes for flash burn. Seems to help. Good luck, Scott

I had something similar happen to be but it wasn't burned eyes, it was rust! I apparently had a small spack of metal dust in my eye and when I woke up, it had left a "rust ring" on the surface of my eye. I could see, but if felt like I had something in my eye and it was very red and irritated. Since it was on a Sunday, I went to the ER and they removed the piece of metal dust. The next day I went to my eye doctor where they "buffed" off the rust ring. The doctor "suggested" that I wear eye protection whenever grinding on metal. Now whenever I've been griding on metal or working in a dusty area, I always thoroughly check my eyes before I go to bed.

Thats what drove me nuts about the whole thing. I was wearing a helmet. I"m not the most seasoned of welders so before I really start I strike it to see where I'm at and then while it's still hot i can see where i'm starting at when i put on my hood. I think thats what got me. I feel fine today though so thats good, and i just got back from the optometrist and he said my eye has healed already so thanks for the concern gents and keep them chevy's purring like a kitten

That sucks. Glad to hear there was no permanent damage. What do you want to bet your bills from the doctors would cover buying one of those helmets that automatically darkens.

Sound like a weld burn to me too. It does not take long. I've worked as a welder for about 11 years at my previous jobs and I burned my eyes a couple of times. Due to laziness mostly. Not wanting to walk 15 feet to get the helmet.

As a high school Ag teacher and welding instructor, i get welder "flash" burn about once every two months. Seems like one of my students are always striking the arc while i'm looking in their direction. i use the potato or cucumber treatment, seems to take the burn out.

I have had both things happen I was grinding and got a piece of steel in my eye. It was either a spark or a piece of cold steel. I did not go to the ER till the next night. I could not sleep all night and it killed to keep my eyes open all day. When I seen the doctor she said I had a rust ring on my eye and if I had waited another couple of hours I would have gone Blind. Thank goodness for Canada and there kicking health care system. I have had welding burn of my eyes too. Kind of feels like sand in your eyes all day. Well I know have a welding mask on at all times and I make sure that I have glasses on too.
Safety is a good thing to keep in mind you only have one set of eyes and I have way to hot of a Girlfriend to loose my eye sight.

If you decide to go with a auto-darkening hood try:

http://www.cyberweld.com

Bought mine through them.

Speedglass hood, well worth the money.
