Got a job today

I got a phone call around 9 pm Thursday evening from an engineer that I used to work with at Tyco Electronics before they shut our facility down and laid off 400 employees.
He started working as an engineer for a company that loads circuit boards (we used to build boards at Tyco) well they need to bring in someone who has a good understanding of circuit boards to start as an Engineer Assistant and work into an Engineering position. I interviewed with them Saturday and again today.

So I start Thursday. They made me a pretty good offer to start and are working around my class schedule at college. After I finish my degree in March and go full-time, my pay will increase substantially.

I won't be applying my networking degree right now, but that's ok and you never know what might open up while I'm there, since they do have computers and all!!

I'm pretty excited to start and finally be making some good money again. I'll finally be able to start doing some real work to my truck. I'll be looking for a daily driver first!!

I also got a business license to do some web design on the side to bring in extra money and will continue working with that as I have the time. But from what I can tell so far, this job is going to pay very nicely.

Just wanted to share the good news with y'all.

No offence but I think your better off not worring about the network thing. Market is so saturated that employers know they can can you and find somebody just as good hungry (and stupid enough) to work for less.

Yeah use to be good money in it but sure isn't now. Most of my friends were into that and have now used their Deloma's and degrees as toilet paper.

Of all my geek ffriends the only ones that are making any money at if are writing the books and have such large brains they have to prop their heads up with bambo poles, (Good buddy and ex roomie is with Intel) have Porn sites they run (Gonzoland and the other 5-6 gonzo sites he owns) or have their own established Web designdevelopment/maintance companies (www.x3creative.com).

I think your going to be better off with what you have just been offered and use your networking stuff to compliment it.

Congrats 5 yrs ago I was offered a job that was somewhat a risk. The traning pay started at 3 dollars less an hour than what I was making and it lasted 3 months. From there the sky was the limit and it is a straight commisioned job. So now what started out as a risk (so I thought) turned out to be a $50k job the first year. From there it has went up about $5K a year. Now Im doing well and glad I took the chance. Nothing like doubling your pay and then some. Good luck to you.

I'm pretty excited. This job couldn't have come at a better time since my NAFTA funds and Unemployment benefits officially run out February 14th. Also, my 3 year old and I are constantly in a battle of wits for the past 3 weeks (since she turned 3). Since she sees me practically ALL the time, she pretty much doesn't take me seriously. No discipline I can give her is seeming to help and I've tried a lot of different methods. I stay consistent and I follow through with what I say I'm going to do. So now I feel it's time to break away from being full-time mom/college student so we actually enjoy the time we spend together. Those of you that have been through this with small children will understand the amount of frustration I have over the past few weeks since we've entered this new phase of being 3...WAY worse than 2 so far!!

Grim...I know what you mean. All the networking jobs around here want 10 years of experience or want to hire you on at $8/hr. It's ridiculous. We can't and won't live on that. I'd prefer to stay home and find a couple of house cleaning jobs or other random stuff to do than waste my time on that wage slaving for an employer and end up spending most of the income on daycare.

This company seems to be very flexible and treats their employees with respect and pays them what they're worth. This position will easily surpass the $32k/year job I had a Tyco when they closed, which is a very good wage in this valley.

Congrads! on getting the job! You now will be able to help stimulate the economy some more. Hope this is a good indicator for job growth in Oregon. Been unemployed for more than 2 years now myself, just living on my part time job and unemployment whenever I don't exceed my minimium. Can't wait to get back to work full time, so I can start spending money without a thought again!

Yep but don't worry....
I actually kind of fell into electronics.
And now after almost 3 years of being out of the industry, I end up back in it without even trying. So now I'm actually beginning to think that this is where I'm supposed to be. That's good though cuz I really enjoy it, as long as companies like Tyco don't come in, buy out the company, and shut it down a year later.

Good luck Mitch. It's rough out there, but there are jobs. I'm learning that all the good jobs aren't found through applications or sending out lots of resumes but through people you know.
I know the electronics industry is coming out of its 2 year slump so hopefully that'll be a good indication that the economy is coming back around.

Ohh boy! your at the fun age. My youngest will be three in Feb. She's suddenly changed and testing the limits and runner her mom ragged. On the other hand she was very mom biased (My wife is a stay at home) but now she's starting to be more of daddies little girl. Thank goodness she is nowhere as bad as her older sister (11) was. Her oldersister was a totla hellion at 3. If we had the youngest first the oldes would probably be dead by now. That kid has been a handfull from the word go! LOL
