HEI and Pertronix
I know that they recommend that you change out the resistance wire from the fuse panel that ran to the coil on the old points system when you are adding HEI to the 67-72 trucks, but do you still need to do this if you are using a pertronix ingition system. I would like to upgrade the ignition system in my truck without modifing the firewall. Please help, Todd.

You can change it out if you want....but you also have to add a non-resistor type wire if you keep it...at least on my pertronix thats what I did.

Goto GMC Pauls web site I just installed a points replacement system that did not require running any new wires, just use the coil wire from the points to + terminal of the coil. Like it better than the pertronix I had.
For the pertronix, if you are running the stock coil then you'll need to keep the resistor wire as is, and only run 12V to the pertronix unit. If you have an aftermarket coil then do what they recommend.

I have the Pertronix setup on my 250. They said to keep the resistor wire, unless you run one of the resistor coils. Personally, I regret getting the Pertronix setup. I'm actually looking for a HEI setup right now. Parts are not avaiable locally, they don't have a 24 hour tech support, if you want a part replaced you have to ship it to them to be tested. With an HEI yopu can get parts at almost any local store. Those are just my thoughts. Good luck. John
BTW: My resistor coil from Pertronix crapped out after about 2 weeks of use. I stuck in the ols Accel unit, and it worked fine. I added a ballast resistor to match Pertronix's specs. You might want to go to their website and look at the FAQ section.
