Pwr Steering Bracket Help!!
I posted last night about my problem with my power steering bracket. Ragin Rat was most helpful with some pictuer to help my with the configuration of the brackets but now im in another dilema. The brackets im using are off of the orignal 1971 307 i yanked out. I dropped in an 80's 350. When mounted the power steering pulley lines up with the inside of the crank pulley and the water pump pulley. I know this is supposed to be on the front. Was there a diffrence in the pump sytle brackets?? I was going to shim out the bracket but id have to shim it quite a bit and then i wouldnt be able to bolt the bracket to the motor mount as it would bring it out to far. Has aony else had this problem?? Anyone have any solutions??? Id appreciate it!!

It really sounds like you are running a combination of both long and short pump parts.
Are you using the water pump, water pump pulley, or crankshaft pulley off of the 80s 350?

the pulley on the water pump is also from the 307, as for the water pump im not sure which one i have im going to be out in the garge here in a bit and ill take some digitals and post them maybe that will help diagnose my problem better.

Yep.
I am trying to run a long water pump( I got it brand new for $30 CDN) I though it would work. I ended up looking in a auto wreckers and grabbing every pully and bracket I could find. The problem is the power steering pump. I need one with a shorter pupm shaft. I am running a passengers side alt and a singlew grove pully on the water pump. There is no way to adjust the alt belt placement so I have to change the powersteering pump. I dont know it i am helping of just blabbing ...... Whatever.

I am running a long set up on my 69. The 2 biggest problems on my set-up is. . . .
1. I cannot use the factory fan shroud. 2. I have headers and had a problem with fully mounting the p/s pump on my engine. I did how ever find this bracket in the local bone yard and it saved my ass. |

ok heres the pics of the mess im in, come to find out the Alt sits back so far that doesnt even hit a pulley!! RaginRat suggested 3 groove pulley on bottom and 2 groove on top...think this will fix my dilema?? Im at my wits end on this thing ive been working on it in 0 degree temps and i need it running soon....any help would be greatly appreciated.....

Looking close at the picture, you have a long water pump and maybe long pump pulleys.
The power steering is for short pump. That is the problem. No fancy pulley work will make it right. You need all of the stuff to match.

Get the pulleys from the old 307. Using the original (short pump) water pump and crank pulleys along with the proper short water pump will make it work properly.

these are the orignal pulleys off of the 307.... the Alt sots to far back to hit any pulley and the pwr steering only hits the inside pulley on the crank. So if i go to a short pump wont that bring the pulley on the water pump closer to the block then i wont have any pulley but the pwr steering lined up with the crank pulley..now im more confused than when i started HAHAHAHA

The picture is hard for me to see the pulleys well. Did they line up with the power steering before?

yup got your pm's rat and sent ya one back, as for hte pulleys lining up before well all the brackets and pulleys came off of the 307 that i yanked out and it was all working fine when i yanked it i have no idea how this came to happen

That bottom pulley is wrong. It's too deep. It's for a long pump setup. Look close at those ones on ebay (which you're winning I see), they aren't deeply offset like the one above is. They are the correct ones.
You've also got a long water pump on there. You need the short one. By the way, don't bid too crazy on those Ebay pulleys. Teeitup or someone like that can sell you ones for a good price.

I went out to the garage and got a picture of one for you.
This is the proper short water pump crankshaft pulley. See how shallow it is compared to the one in your picture?

i just got done road testing my 68 after doing a pwr steering swap about 15 minutes ago. i used the box and pump and lines from a 71. my truck also has a long water pump. everything bolted up fine but i did have to use a triple groove crank pulley for a long water pump. the alt. uses the outside groove and the pwr steering used the next groove in. it doesn`t line up totally but it`s close enough for me. also, i had a few setbacks when converting mt manual box to pwr. the outer bumper bracket is different and had to be removed. the rag joint coupler is different splines and the return line hard line was straight up and down. i had to bend the line a bit and notch the inner fender to get clearance for the line. i could have just bought a new line i guess but i did`nt want to spend anymore money than i had to. all i can say is it was worth any trouble cuz it turns alot better and the power box isn`t sloppy line the manual was. good luck.

This pic shows three correct power steering pumps. There are differences between pulley alignment location.
