Engine Hoist Sale
I'm not trying to advertise for this outfit, but Manny, Moe & Jack (the Pep Boys) has a Torin 2-Ton engine hoist on sale until Feb. 13 for $119.95, if anyone is in need of one.
This is my first post, so I hope I did this right... |

We bought 6 of the 4 legged engine stands from Harbor Freight 2 years ago and have had big block complete motors on them with no problems. Drove 7 miles to pick them up at the Sarasota store.

I have one of the stands also and it works good. Just make sure you grease the hub on the stand or turning the motor is a real pain, at least it was with mine.

Howdy from Seattle.
My opinion of Harbor Freight (Fright) isn't very good. I got one of their $40 engine stands, and it will do the job, but it's a cast-iron beast. I'm hesitant to use the ears that connect the block to the holding plate because they're cast and don't look very strong. The plate itself uses a kneck to slide into the stand, and the welding looks like it won't hold up. Another thing was that 1/2 of the bolts were missing when it showed up. There was a giant hole in the box all of the hardware dissapeared through while in transit. Piss-poor shipping. Right now it's decorating my dad's shop and hasn't been used yet. If you're going to invest in stuff like this I'd recomend getting a good used one you know works well...or buy a new one from a good distributor.

Engine Hoist Sale
WOW! Thanks for the warm reception and greetings to all from sunny (and lately, very windy!) So. California!
My experience with Harbor Freight Tools, probably like most of you, has been hit-or-miss; some of their stuff is junk, some of it is a real bargain. I probably would have bought the engine hoist from them for $79.99 over the one I bought for $120 (assuming they were of equivalent quality), but they don't show that price in their online catalog, so (to me) that means it's probably a where-is, as-is kind of deal...YMMV. Anyway, I don't get a commission from either Manny, Moe, or Jack, so the less you spend on tools the more have to spend on truck parts! I would love to buy a good, used one and save the $$$ as well as having a known working item, but it always seems that nobody is selling when I'm buying! The shipping on a heavy item like that will eat you alive...although you could prolly ship it by truck for a lot less if you knew how... |

As far as the truck goes...
After casually looking for the past few years, we found a '70 Chevy SWB Stepside in very good condition for $2k...the down side is that it hasn't been registered or non-op'ed since 2000, so the back registration fees and penalties in CA amount to about $400...the truck has a tired and smoky 6 cyl., and is located about 55 miles from where we live, so I upgraded my AAA membership in order to get it towed to its new home.
The truck is out of the desert and is relatively rust-free...the bed and tailgate are in excellent shape, but there are a few holes on the bed rails that need to be filled. The wood is missing in areas of the bed floor, but all the metal strips are there and in excellent shape. The cab is very good, fenders are all very good with the exception of the front passenger side which has a ding in the forward wheel housing area. The grille is "modified", the front bumper is not an original, rear bumper is the diamond plate step type. The dash is uncut, although someone has added a couple of aftermarket gauges to the bezel. The 3-speed manual tranny has been converted to a floor shift. The PO doesn't know if the bench seat is original or not...it's been re-uphostered, and it has a hump in the middle, but it sure fits nice and is comfortable to sit on. The seat mount looks original, so I'll take some pics when I get it home and let you guys tell me if it's original. It starts right up and runs real smooth, although it is a bit smoky at idle...definitely will attract the Highway Patrol if I tried to drive it home. The plan is to upgrade it to a SBC/auto/PDB/PS/AC, but I don't want to make it too nice to where we're afraid to drive it or haul anything in it...and I don't want to get too far away from stock because the truck is so nice to begin with... |

Hoist
I have been looking for a hoist for sometime now and just didn't want to spend two hundo. Went to Pep Boys and bought the Torin. Folds up, looks sturdy , and will do what I need. Thanks for the sale tip off. $126 and change (after tax) and she's home!
I'm going to pull the engine on my 71' before she goes to paint next week.

Picked mine up on the way home from work tonight. It is now assembled and folded in the corner of the garage. Going to pull the motor off the frame tomorrow and reomove a cab from another truck. Saw the load leveler in 1 pic. I didn't see that at Pep Boys. Did you get it somewhere else?
