Starter 168 tooth??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Went to Checker today to get a starter for my engine ive put in. I counted the teeth on my flexplate before i went. When i was in there they didnt know what starter would work with 168 tooth flexplate. I know it has to do with the amount of teeth on the starter correct?? If so how many should be on the starter for 168 tooth flexplate?? Thanks in advance all you guys on the board have been such a great help so far.....

I think replacement starter will work on either flexplate. That is just what I've read here, take that as you may. I've bolted up newer model, older model, manual tranny starter and they have all seemed to work without a hitch. maybe I have just been lucky.

Starter drives are the same. You will want to get the starter with the diagonal mounting holes for the 168 tooth flex plate.

so basically as long as it has the diagnol mounting that mounts to the block it will work???

The diagonal mounting sets the starter in the right position for the larger pitch diameter that the 168 tooth ring gear has. So that is what you need.
