If I install an msd box like 6a or similar. What does it bypass in the dist the power module? How about the advances and such? Just curious what it controls and what in the dist is now not important?

It does not bypass that module.
It does not take the place of you vacuum advance mech. either.

They bascially make the ignition fire several times whereas the stock one just fires once.
They make Top-Notch stuff BTW.

Here is my situation I have about 300.00 to spend on ignition I would like to get a msd probillit hei for 318.00. But many of my friends say get like an accel dist and a super hie kit with the 6a box from msd for about 335.00 total? Just can not decide.

I say scrape up some extra change, including the stuff that falls in-between the cushions of the sofa and get a MSD pro billet dist., MSD blaster 2 coil, and a MSD 6AL box. This set up will give you a good distributor that you can set up the advance the way your engine likes it, gets the coil out of the out of the distributor cap witch I think is a bad place for one. And with the 6AL you get a rev-limitor. The up side is you get a good system that can be adjusted and grow with your engine. Down side I think it’s going to blow the spending limit, might have to check your friend’s sofa also.

But I can get the dist. now and solve my dist problem then add the box and coil in say 6 months or so right?

The 6A or 6AL does not use the GM ignition module. If you add the box to a stock HEI, you have to install a little harness to take the place of the module.

Depends on what you are wanting as to if you can buy the distributor now. If you are wanting a HEI type of distributor, they have the Pro-billet HEI. But with the box, you don't need an HEI. I have one, and added the 6AL kit to it which comes with an external coil and related wiring. So I sold my MSD HEI coil and module that came with the Pro-billet. It's just an extra expense to go this way.

If you do like Eric, you will need to buy a coil now so you can use the distributor. Then later add the box. Either way will work, but a non HEI distributor will be cheaper.

I don't mean to dispute Swerve but my 6AL does use the module inside my HEI.
That was the first question I asked MSD when I put the box on................."Can I lose the module?"
They said no...........at least not without buying the 8361 Billet dist. designed just for this.
This is what they said and also what the instructions from MSD said.

I've had several guys on here tell me that if I have an HEI dizzy then I do not need the 6AL box. What is this all about?

You have every right to dispute.

But, I don't have one in my Pro-Billet HEI. When I bought the 6AL kit, it comes with a harness to replace the module. Also read this link. It's in PDF, so you will need Acrobat Reader.

I also agree with swervin, my HEI is empty 'cept for the pickup coil and MSD harness (magnetic trigger). Although a MSD can be connected to the module using the high voltage (white) wire just like connecting it to a points engine. So basically, everyone is correct.

I was just going by what MSD said but I am glad to know that I might be able to lose the module........thanks Swervin!
I hate those modules because they have failed on me at the worst times. No where to vent heat gets them.
