how to ID No-Spin rearend? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

hey everyone, quick question:
I am looking at buying an Eaton HO52 with the factory No-Spin (Detroit Locker) and I know there is a way to check with the diff cover off, but I forget it. I just want to make sure I'm not gonna get an open diff, which isn't what I need. Any help would be appreciated.

turn one of the wheels. If the wheel on the other side spins the same direction then you have a "no-spin" rearend. If it goes the opposite direction you don't have a "no-spin" rearend.

This is the correct one.. if when you look at it and you see the area circled in red has a brass looking plate in there... thats the locker unit.

Or you could just buy the locker unit its self... this was 1 I had but sold to board member..he was happy with it. I have lockers in my 3/4 ton 4x4 and my 1 ton dually.. I like em, and look for more when I'm out parts hunting.

You can check if its there with the spinning method...but you can spin a wheel and not have the other one spin... its gotta grab first.. so give it a couple vigorous spins like when your stuck and if it locks together you'll know. If it goes oppsosite way like in post above it aint the right stuff.

Rear Axle Help / Question.
My 72 3/4 Ton 4X4 Cheyenne Super has a
G86 No Spin Rear Axle
Does this mean it's a locker, and not a posi?
A friend told me chevy never installed lockers from the factory (I don't know how much he really knows however).

Darren,
yes the No-Spin is a Detroit locker for the HO axles. It was an option 67-72, and perhaps before that as well.

67fleetsidedream, I am looking at buying just the axle. it is not connected to a truck, so i was looking for a way to ID by looking inside the pumpkin.

Rod, a brass look? Do you have a pic of one handy so I could tell the diff (no pun intended)?

If you can see gears inside the differential, its open.
If you don't see gears, just smooth metal inside, its a Detroit Locker. Look for a metal tag on one of the pinion seal flange bolts, too. If it still exists, then its the Locker.

Well... lets try explaining it a little different. You do have a color monitor right? LOL

Here is a pic of the same detroit locker posted above.... this one shows a little area circled in red... that the same type area posted and circled in the post above... you cant see a whole locker in the housing unless you take it apart.

Pretty much if you can stick your finger in that hole and you dont hit anything ...then there is no locker installed in the carrier.

If you hit that brass looking thing.. which is the side of the locker you got a prize.

A tight limited slip will do that also.

With the wheels off the gound have a buddy hold one wheel and you hold the other. Give it a quick jerk one direction then the other and keep spinning. That should cause it to unlock and Should hear it ratchet.

I'm the member that Adam bought the rear end off of. I was pleased to here when he picked it up today he was happy with it. As I told him, the truck had all the good HD options, as it was a Custom Camper option with the SM420 tranny, HD springs, 327cu motor, no-spin, etc.

The truck was parked in 1974 with 99,000 miles on the clock and not driven after that. I had no reason to doubt that the locker was still in the rear axle, but Adam opened her up today and sure enough it was still there.
