ERIC, looking at your engine specs i really don't understand why your runnning the 2.73's. I know it most likely came with them ,but are they to stay?? your definitely going to benefit from the converter because it will SOMEWHAT allow the engine to 'up' on the cam before it locks. Keep in mind that most 2.73's aren't at a high enough RPM even at highway speeds to allow the converter to fully'lock' ,so a lot of unnecessary heat & slippage will take place. DAVE

i'm pretty sure eric is going to go with different gears when he gets a chance as am I.

well basically if you have the power to get them spinning off the line, and you will, they will spin forever. the centripetal force of the higher gears keeps them spinning once you start. you'll probly burn rubber through all 3 gears. but it won't feel as fast from a slow punch and it won't really get out of the hole quick. basically your just going to be spinning your tires like i do. if you go with like 3.73 it will be easier to get them to start spinning but they won't do it for as long. your best bet is some 3.73 and sticky tires.

i won't have any traction problems when its all said and done

oh yeah, if you dont have traction problems, you arent making enough power

The stall is great at 2500 rpm, but the gears totally suck. With the engine you're putting in it, it will feel like a jet dragster compared to the 305. But, when you change to 3.73's the difference in off the line power will be astounding. With the 2.73 gears you have now, did your lockup work before? If it does work after you get it back together, it will be going in and out of lock all the time. It will feel a tad doggy on the bottom end with the cam and converter until you get the gears though. And as Ryan stated, it will spin the tires forever but you won't be going near as fast as it should be. 3.73's will decrease off the line traction for sure, but it will wind up quicker and the need to change gears will happen sooner, so the spinning length will decrease.

Well, if it doesn't lock, you will be spinning the converter all the time with the 2.73 gears. At 70 mph, you will be turning aound 2300 rpm, so you are below stall all the time. This is not a good situation IMO.

I have the same crappy gears in my 78. Interesting I aslo have a 71 355. 4 bolt but alot more mild then this motor. I run 1.94 factory heads, 280 wolverine blue racer cam, 1406, hedmen headers. I run a 2000 stall with a shift kit turbo 350. I plan to go to a 3.55 posi gears for my rear. I think 3.73 without a overdrive will be a little rough on the freeway. For racing those gears would be great.
