Clock In Dash

A local guy who knows a lot about these 73-87 trucks looked at my dash and said that it was very rare that they have a clock in them. It is original, at least it matches all the other gagues, and it is in the bottom left hole, which on just about evry one i have seen is empty.
This guy almost ripped it out and stole it for his truck, because he says hes been wanting one for a while and cant find one anywhere...

So this is one for the gurus, HOW RARE IS IT?

He must not be looking hard enough as they have been listed on Ebay auctions, in catalogs, etc.

It's not that rare at all my truck has one and i see trucks in the junk yard all the time that have them.

But i would say more truck's were built with out them than with since it was an option item and most people didn't want to spend the extra money on it.

But by no mean's is it rare and they don't keep time that accurately when they get old.

I dont even use mine i always look at the CD player

The one in my 87 is pretty 'old' but it keeps time perfectly. My 86 doesn't have one since it came with the digital AM/FM tape radio that had a clock. I don't know if you COULDN'T get a clock with that radio, but it would make sense.

I've got one in my '82 K30, but it loses about 1 hour a day. I figure I'll leave it there, but use the one on the stereo if I really need to know what time it is.

I've been using the "broken clock" excuse for my being late getting home for a month or two. Do you figure I can get her to cough up the cash to fix it? I could sure use the $ for a headliner......

I have one and it still works. It is noisy, though. Sometimes when the engine is off I hear it and panic about the faint gringing noise until I remember what it is.

Most of the time they came in deluxe trucks. But they could be ordered in any truck of course. I have one in a 81 Chevy 1/2 ton truck. It was a factory diesel truck. With AM/FM CB!!!!!! Diesel truck, automatic, with AC. But no tilt? Its a weird truck.

I see those clocks and tach dashes on Ebay all the time. Is it major wiring surgery to install them or do they just plug in to the factory harnass?

I don't think they are rare.

I have one and have thought about removing it just because of the ticking sound...

Is there a blank to replace it?

If one was to install one of these clocks (for whatever reason) where would the parking brake indicator go? That's what I've typically seen in the bottom left hole in the instrument cluster.

The 87 Silverado i bought last December has a clock. Has been real accurate to date. Is there an 81-87 dash that came stock with a tach and a clock.

My long gone 83 high Sierra had one, and my current 85 scottsdale has one. So I wouldn't say their rare.

in dash clock

The dash clock is rare in the pre 1981 models. Neaarly ALL the 6.2 Diesel models had this clock as they all had factory gauges and were not available with a factory tachometer. Starting I THINK in 1981 the clock movement was of the Quartz variety rather than the old style self-winding type. You have to replace the instrument lens when installing this clock (I know you have one but for those who do not) as the lens with the clock has the small home in it for the set knob to protrude.

tach and clock

The factory tach is wired seperately from the other gauges and not included in the printed circuit sheet. It is a two-wire lead that plugs onto the back of the tach itself and then one of those wires, the brown one, plugs onto the 'tach' lead on the distributor (HEI) and the other to a IGNITION power supply. You can use this hrness/plug from anything GM with HEI of the model years 73-89. The problem with the clock would not really be wiring but finding the entire instrument lens as it has to be replaced due to the small hole in the lens over the clock where the set knob comes through.

take it from someone that knows- don't bother arguing about what idiot lights or warning lights were in What year . you'll NEVER get it right. there is no end to the combinations through the years . as far as the clocks go the quartz came around in about 83 and can be relied on. It is not a big deal to add just that clock. Will require hole in back of plastic housing, but easy to screw up PC if your not careful. the NONquartz clocks have the adjustment knob in a different place than the quartz so if you already have an analog clock the quartz is still not a true drop in. They are not rare unless it's a non quartz one and it still keeps good time- ,DAVE
